1920 ~ MATILDA SCHLAHT ~ 2021

Matilda Lenora “Tillie” Schlaht of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Jacob Schlaht, passed away on Thursday, May 6th, 2021 at the age of 101 years. Tillie leaves to cherish her memory her children, Diane (Raymond) Van Bavel, Delphene Good (Gerry Schoonbaert) and Alan (Laurel) Schlaht; grandchildren, Troy (Dawn) Van Bavel, David Van Bavel, Joseph (Patti) Van Bavel, Donna Lee (Dale) Robertson, Jo Lynn Sheeshka, Dawn (Curtis Atkins) Good, Krys (Josh) Trahan and Jenna Schlaht; Helen Van Bavel; eleven great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, David and Molly Sturm; husband, Jacob Schlaht; brother, Victor Sturm; sister, Vi Castleman; and grandson, Carter Schlaht. Tillie was born on January 14th, 1920 in Estuary, SK; the youngest of three children. She started her schooling at Sandy Point and then moved across the river to complete her education at the Social Plains School. As a young girl Tillie enjoyed the great outdoors and liked to play baseball and loved her cats. Tillie met Jacob “Jack” Schlaht at a skating party held on the South Saskatchewan river. They married in Calgary where Jack was stationed with the army in WWII and Tillie worked as a waitress at the canteen. Jack was later stationed to Vancouver where Tillie took a job as a waitress. Following the war, Tillie and Jack took over her parent’s farm. Tillie was a true example of a hardworking ranch/farm wife. She was familiar with both the challenges and opportunities that the ranch life presented. She raised a family, kept the household, and actively assisted in the running of the farm. Tillie often prepared and delivered meals out in the field. Some could say she was a pioneer of the very first “tailgate parties”. In 1979, Tillie and Jacob retired in Medicine Hat. Tillie remained active and loved to square dance. She was a member of Emil Schlenker’s group and she even had the opportunity to dance in the ocean in Bermuda. Tillie’s love for family and adventure took her to visit relatives in Australia and the United States. On her 100th birthday, Tillie was overjoyed to receive a congratulatory birthday greeting from the Queen. Tillie was a friend to all and a role model to those who knew her. Her everlasting legacy is her family, and she will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Bratvold for his ongoing care and compassion as well as the Dr. Hirsch, staff and residents at Riverview Care Centre who were a second family to her. DARLENE FAYE ROSENAU (LEVENNE)

1940-2021

Darlene was born on January 31, 1940, in Redcliff Alberta, passed away April 27, 2021, in Hanna Alberta, at the age of 81 years. She was born into the world premature and only three pounds, Darlene was a fighter for life. She grew up in a small town where not only parents were a part of raising her, but the community helped shape her outlook on life. The Levenne children had neighbors that kept a close eye on them. Darlene had a lot of respect for these people, and this influenced how she looked out for family, friends, and neighbors.
She came to the Youngstown area with her son Les Johnson in answer to an ad in the Western Producer for a housekeeper from Charles Rosenau in 1965. In December of 1969 Charles married Darlene.
Darlene loved her family and tried to stay in touch with her siblings and families; Christmas cards and visits were especially important to her. As time went on, she was able to make herself more at home with neighbors and Charles’ family. Knowing what it was like to come into a new community, she would help and be friends with anyone new.
There came a point that both Charles and Darlene gave their lives to God through the salvation of their Lord Jesus Christ. They attended the Gospel Chapel of Youngstown where their circle of friends grew larger.
Darlene had a very compassionate heart and if anyone were hurt, mentally or physically, had a loss, or in the hospital, Darlene would always have food, a visit, or a card fit for the occasion. She empathized with people in all circumstances, whether a birthday, wedding, a funeral or just life.
Music was a big part of Darlene’s life. From dance music/polkas when she was young, to Country and Western to fill an empty house, and hymns and spirituals. She appreciated specials that would be sung at the chapel and especially loved watching and listening to the Gaither Vocal Group. She passed away while the hymn “Softly and Tenderly” was playing beside her.
When Darlene moved to the farm, she lived it to the fullest. She rode a horse (though not her favorite thing to do), milked a cow and helped Charles with feeding and caring for the cattle. She also cultivated, combined, drove a grain truck, and more, whenever called to do so. She especially adored cats, and for a time part of her world revolved around her house cats.
Before lack of dexterity and poor eyesight, she crocheted many articles of clothing for newborns, doilies for wedding gifts, and articles to give away. Her focus changed to sewing quilts for a time, and giving those away, her gracious and giving heart was felt by many. Darlene was an exceptionally good cook and capable of making meals for crowds of people at brandings and weanings. Guests would also appreciate her Sunday dinners. Being a farm wife, she so much appreciated helping out and catching up with fellow neighbor wives when they had to prepare their branding and weaning meals too. When grandchildren came into her life, she was overjoyed. She enjoyed the time she spent with them and was immensely proud of their accomplishments.
As she and Charles began to deal with age-related issues, they moved from the farm to the Seniors Lodge in Hanna. They moved in June 1st of 2014 and she resided there until April 11, 2021. She greatly appreciated the homecare and staff that took care of her at the lodge.
She was predeceased by her twin infant girls, Lana Lee and Loretta Louise; parents Jules and Winnifred Levenne; brother Wayne Levenne; one sister Francis Lentz; husband Charles Rosenau; sister-in-law Edna Triebwasser; brother-in-law’s Elroy Lando, Arthur Rosenau, and Lawrence Triebwasser. She is survived by sisters Hazel (Severn) Barber, Julie Noble; sister-in-law’s, Norma Levenne, Edna Rosenau; brother-in-law Gordon Lentz; daughter-in-law Cheryl Johnson and her family, Eric, Vicki, Kyle (Marie-Anne) and their children Zachary, Rebecca, Jonah and Lydia; son Glen (Christina) Rosenau, their family Raylene, Bryce, Crocus; and not forgotten by her nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service was held at the Youngstown Cemetery on May 2, 2021.
If desired donations in memory of Darlene can be made directly to the Hanna Ladies Auxiliary, Box 23, Hanna, AB, T0J 1P0.

LILLIAN MARIE RILEY

January 14, 1934 – May 11, 2021

Charlene Smith, Norman Riley and daughter-in-law Cathy are sad to announce the passing of Lillian on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. Lil was born to Fred and Elizabeth Wutzke in Medicine Hat and grew up on the farm just east of the Haig School she attended. She spoke often and fondly of her youth and the hijinks she and her brother Alvin and their friends would get into. Lil married Charlie in October of 1954, and so began a lifelong love affair that ended upon Charlie’s death in February of 2018. She had missed him dearly ever since. Daughter Charlene in 1955 and son Norman in 1959, completed the family. Lil’s children were her pride and joy and they were lucky to grow up supported by her love and devotion. She would be very involved in their activities such as a 4-H leader for Charlene’s group and band booster club, etc. Lil worked side by side with Charlie on the farm and with Uncle Norman Stead who was really like a grandpa to them. She loved her life on the farm and the active and vibrant rural community of which they were a part. So many stories of fun with friends and at Conquerville community events! She was a long time member of the Conquerville W.I. until its dissolution. Lil was an accomplished quilter and seamstress and won the Alberta W.I. Best Seamstress provincial award for the creation of Charlene’s wedding dress. Lil was a great cook and worked hard to keep a big garden from which much preserving and pickling would be done. She kept making her dill pickles right up to last summer and they will be missed at the dinner tables. Her flower gardens were also lovely, and after her move to Bow Island in 2016, the condo board soon found out that yes, there would be flowerbeds under her windows! She was very much looking forward to spring things, but it was not to be. Lil and Charlie liked to take motoring trips and the most mentioned excursions were to P.E.I. in 1954 and 1988 to visit family, to California with Alex and Irene Onody, and trips to Nevada. While Charlie was a Lion, they attended many events in numerous locales. They also enjoyed a trip to Hawaii with George and Yvonne Schile. The 5 year Wutzke Reunions were always very special occasions for her. Travel weeks away seemed to come to an end with the arrival of Norman and Cathy’s children: Taryn in 1988 and Bradley and Raelyn in 1991. These three occupied a large part of Grandma’s heart. Now her attentions were turned to the grandchildren as she sewed beautiful dresses and outfits for them over the years. Lil and Charlie seemed happiest when they were attending the kids concerts, sporting events and dance and piano recitals. She stayed keenly interested in their lives as they grew into young adults and they basked in her love and concern for them. Lil will be greatly missed for her warm and welcoming smile, her stories and sense of humour, her generosity, her fierce political acuity and her keen interest in Norm’s work on the farm. Cathy will sorely miss dropping in for a visit. Also left to cherish Lil’s memory is her brother Alvin (Mary) Wutzke and his five boys and their families, Charlie’s step-brother Ernie (Doris) Jurkat and his two daughters, step-sister Marilyn (Ralph) Wilson, numerous P.E.I. relatives, many Wutzke relations, and her dear friend, Claire Fraser. Along with Charlie, Lil was predeceased by her parents, brother-in-law Russel Oginski, Uncle Norman Stead and son-in-law Jim Smith. A memorial service will be held at a later date. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com). Memorial donations may be made directly to HALO, #12 – 49 Viscount Avenue S.W., Medicine Hat, AB, T1A 5G4.
