1928 ~ Margaret June MacKenzie ~ 2020
We are sad to announce the passing of Margaret MacKenzie on October 25, 2020 at the age of 92 years. She died peacefully in her sleep in the Continuing Care section of the Bow Island Health Centre where she had lived for many months. Margaret was an important part of the Foremost community for most of her life. She is survived by her sons, Colin (Susan Kierstead) and Richard (Jennifer Bain); her grandchildren, Lucy, Hazel and Charlie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Ken; their son, Norman; as well as her parents; sisters, Dorothy and Rose; and brother, Joseph. Margaret MacKenzie was born in Stettler on June 30, 1928, the second daughter of John and Pauline Lockwood. She grew up on the family farm nearby. Later the family moved to Stettler. This was the great depression of the 1930’s and times were tough. As her father was an invalid, Margaret was forced to leave school early. She worked as a hairdresser in Calgary, then Edmonton. After Margaret’s father’s death, her mother moved to Edmonton and set up a boarding house. In Edmonton she met Ken MacKenzie, an Agriculture student who often ate at the boarding house. They married in Edmonton in 1949 and moved to the Onefour Dominion Experimental Farm for about two years. While there, Ken was involved in the “cattalo” experiments, which sought to find a hybrid of cattle and bison. In 1951 Ken and Margaret took over the MacKenzie family ranch in Chin Coulee, near Foremost and converted it over time from a sheep ranch to primarily a cattle ranch. They raised three children, Colin born in 1951, Norman born in 1953, and Richard born in 1958. Ken and Margaret ranched until 1993 when they retired to live in Foremost. Margaret, along with her husband Ken, were heavily involved in the Foremost community. Margaret had a particular interest in artistic pursuits. She painted and did some design work. Among her earlier designs was the pronghorn antelope on the chinaware made for Foremost’s 50th Anniversary in 1963. There were very few years that the parade for the Foremost Stampede, the Maverick Mardi Gras, or local fair that she did not feature at least one float that she had played a major role in designing and working on. She was active with the Foremost Theatrical Society starting in 1972 and continued to be for many years. Along with Ken, she worked as a set designer and with lighting in the early years as well as with makeup, props and other backstage work. She also assisted Foremost School drama productions, particularly with makeup. She was particularly skilled at leathercraft. Aside displaying her own work in numerous craft shows, she spent many years teaching adult education courses in the County of Forty Mile and elsewhere.
Margaret was also involved with the Agricultural Society, the Senior Citizen’s Society, the Foremost Library, and the Foremost Community Hall Association. She was involved the the local 4H club as an assistant leader, working mostly with leathercraft. She judged leathercraft and food at many local Agricultural fairs in southern Alberta. Ken and Margaret went on a number of trips to destinations such as Aruba, Eastern Canada and the Southern United States in their later years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May of 1999. Ken passed away on October 16, 1999. Their son, Norman passed away in a tragic car accident on March 4, 2003. Margaret will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren. We all remember her hard work in the community and, of course, her famous bread and cinnamon buns. Thank you to the wonderful staff at the Bow Island Health Centre Continuing Care Section for making Margaret’s last days as pleasant as possible. A memorial service will be held at some point in the future when it is safe to travel and gather. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Bow Island Health Centre Continuing Care Section, 938 Centre Street Bow Island, AB T0K 0G0 or Foremost Senior Citizen’s Centre, 103 1 Ave. E, Foremost, AB T0K 0X0. EMIL ROLOFF
1938 ~ 2020
Mr. Emil Roloff passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at the age of 82 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Elizabeth ‘Liz’ (Doug) Unrau and Julie (Allen) Helm; grandson, Austin Helm; sisters, Ella Reuer and Hilda Wohlford as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Emil was predeceased by his companion, Anne Haubrech and his parents, John and Bertha Roloff (nee Haas). Emil was born on May 14, 1938, in Bessarabia. He and his family endured many hardships during the war including camps in Poland. Thanks to the sponsorship of his dad’s uncle, they immigrated to Canada in 1952 and resided in Redcliff. Emil worked in the Redcliff greenhouses for a short time to help support the family. He then started in construction, working for Albert Stober as a labourer, where he continued to work until getting a job at Dominion Glass in 1964. He married in 1961 and started a family. Emil then got an opportunity to work at Western Canadian Fertilizers and would also do side cement jobs on weekends and evenings after work. He eventually went on to start his own cement business. Emil worked very hard to provide his family a comfortable life style so they could do the things they loved: camping, fishing, skiing and playing cards with friends. Later in life, he and his companion Anne made a life together, along with their little dog, Kizzy. They both meant the world to him. When Anne passed away he moved into a senior’s home. Emil was a very hard worker who had a heart of gold who would give you the shirt off his back. His favourite thing was eating the fresh fruit off the trees in the Okanagan when they would go on holidays. He will be truly missed by his family and friends. The family would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses on 4 West for all of their support. A private family service will be held at a later date. MIKE RICHTER
1935 ~ 2020
It is with sadness that the family of Michael Richter, beloved husband of the late Bernice Richter, announces his passing at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at the age of 85 years. Michael was born on a farm near Fox Valley, the 12th of 15 children to Lawrence and Barbara Richter. At four years of age, the family moved to a farm northeast of Richmond and that was where he went to school for nine years. He spoke only German upon his first day of school, but he learned English fast as that was the only language allowed to be spoken in school. He would walk or ride by horse or carriage to school daily. Life was difficult on the farm and Michael learned at an early age how to pick rocks, feed the livestock and help with the farming. He left home when he was 16 years old and after a few short stints as a farm hand and general laborer, he found himself a job with the CPR , which as he put it, “he would do until something better came along”. His career lasted 37 years. He started out working on the gangs and worked his way up to Road Master for Medicine Hat. Michael met Bernice at a dance in Buffalo while stationed out there. He was at the dance with Bernice’s brother Arnold, when he got dragged up to dance by Bernice. They were married in Empress on November 15, 1957 and continued to dance together for over 60 years of marriage. They moved to Cluny with their older children, Sharron and Calvin and then to Bassano where they had the younger three children, Coreen, Darcy and Vicki. In 1970, they made their final move to Medicine Hat where he became the Assistant Road Master for a few years before becoming the Road Master. Michael could only be described as a character. He was always saying something different and he had a quirky sense of humor that could make most people laugh. He faithfully took Mom dancing with friends every Friday and Saturday to the Moose and then over to Humpty’s afterwards for some more antics. Michael retired at 55 and immediately started playing Slow Pitch in the Senior Men’s league. He pitched in the league for years. He also got involved in the German’s from Russia Society and found long lost relatives in Germany, which he visited twice. He organized a Richter Reunion and also wrote a book about the Richter Clan to celebrate what would have been his Dad’s 100 birthday. Michael took up carpentry and made numerous, beautiful cabinets, stools, pictures frames and so on. Michael and Bernice loved to camp. They were always glad when the kids would come along too. Michael and Bernice loved to travel. They went all over Canada, a large part of the United States, Germany, Hawaii and they even cruised the Panama Canal and made it up to the North Pole. He and Bernice moved into River Ridge in 2016 and this was where he spent the last four years of his life. He rarely missed a Bingo game or the days they had music and he continued to amuse the staff there until he became sick and passed away on November 4. Rest in peace Dad. We love you… Michael leaves to cherish his memory his children: Coreen (James) Sheardown and Vicki Fode; grandchildren, Carmen Worobets (Brent), Dean (Cindy) Richter, Kevin (Pascale) Richter, Brendon Fode, Christopher Sheardown and Shayla Fode; sister, Rose; daughter-in-law, Susan Richter; son-in-law, Don Taylor as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Michael was predeceased by his wife, Bernice; three children, Sharron, Calvin and Darcy as well as 13 siblings. Due to Covid restrictions, the Celebration of Michael’s life will be private for family. Those wishing to experience the Celebration are encouraged to visit

VALENTINE GETZ
Almost a week has passed since family and friends gathered at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church to honour the life of Valentine ‘Val’ Getz. Vigil Prayers last Friday provided an opportunity for family to share tributes, including heartfelt words as shared by Val’s son, Gerry along with memories from his grandchildren. The Funeral Mass on Saturday provided comfort through the hope of eternal life with the knowledge that this is not good-bye, but farewell ‘till we meet again in God’s kingdom.
“As tears fill up your eyes,
During the weeks and months to come,
Rejoice in knowing Val is at peace,
At home with the Lord, as one.”
His Life Lived…
His Life Cherished…
His Life Honoured.
