1935 ~ OLGA SOMMERFELD ~ 2020

It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Olga Sommerfeld of Medicine Hat, AB on Friday, June 19, 2020 at the age of 84 years after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. We are so grateful that she is now “free” and in the presence of her Lord and Saviour. We can only imagine the smile on her face as she entered the pearly gates greeted by many she loved! She was the loving wife of Rodney Sommerfeld and leaves to cherish her memory, her children Pat (Barry ) Heller, Shelley (Barry) Hartung and Kenton (Sheri) Sommerfeld as well as her grandchildren Kyle (Janet) Heller, Jocelyn (Felix) Ajayi, Alesha (Tyler) Krupa, Ryan (Janelle) Hartung, and Brady Sommerfeld as well as her Great- grandchildren Katelyn, Zachary, Cassidy, Aiden and Madalyn. Olga was predeceased by her parents and six brothers and sisters, as well as two grandsons, Bryce Heller and Jaydon Sommerfeld. Olga was born on September 13, 1935 in Swift Current, SK. After high school, she attended Prairie Bible Institute having a great interest in Missions. She married the love of her life, Rodney Sommerfeld on October 8, 1955. During their early married years, Olga was a huge support for her husband when he was in university. Besides taking care of two small children, she took in boarders to help financially. She spent long hours in the evenings typing out all of Rod’s papers perfectly. Through the years she was always a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Olga was an active member of Hillcrest church for over 30 years and loved singing in the church choir. Her other passions were cooking in the kitchen for countless functions and being a cook at Pinecrest Bible Camp. She enjoyed kids and babies especially and always enjoyed her time helping out in the church nursery. She worked for many years as secretary of the Evangelical Church Conference and also Secretary for the Evangelical Women’s Association. In her spare time, she loved gardening, sewing, canning and doing cross-stitch. She was Rod’s right-hand assistant with his framing business and always enjoyed helping him. Playing Rook and/or Queens in the evenings with friends was one of her favourite things to do. She supported Rod through his many years of playing ball, always cheering him on while at the same time being the score keeper and chatting with the other wives. Olga was happiest when the sun was shining, with a cup of black coffee in her hand, being surrounded by the family she dearly loved. Her grandchildren were the apple of her eye and she adored every moment spent with them. We would describe her best as having a tender “servant heart”, loving, patient, kind, warm and gentle. She was selfless, always putting others first. She truly lived out her Christian faith and loved others. She will be truly missed! The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Franz Jonker and the staff at Good Samaritan Society for their wonderful care and compassion for Olga over the past 9 years. We will be having private internment. The celebration of Olga’s life will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 1Z5, on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at 2:00 pm. Elaine Joyce Acker passed away on June 15, 2020. She was born on May 5, 1956 in Calgary, AB. She spent a good portion of her adult life in Medicine Hat, AB and considered this city her home, where her heart was. She was a beautiful, passionate and free spirited soul. If she wasn’t singing, she was humming. She loved music, with Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison being her absolute favorite. CKUA radio was always on in her car. Her smile was infectious, it would light up rooms when she entered. She was so kind. She never judged a single soul. She accepted and loved everybody and always wanted to make everyone around her feel loved and accepted. She just loved loving. She had two children; a son and daughter and absolutely loved being a mom. Her daughter Sari (Sarah) was her everything. She has four grandchildren who have now gained a guardian angel in heaven. She was very close with her parents and loved her brother, sister, nieces and nephews very much. They were a very close family. Card games with her parents was an almost daily activity when they were together. Baking with her mom, especially at Christmas time, was one of her favorite things to do. Sadly, in 2015 she was diagnosed with dementia. The family is very happy her struggles with addiction and dementia are now over.
