BENNING
Ed Benning, at age 79, passed away at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on December 13, 2019. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Joan, their daughter, Jenna, and daughters Noreen, Mary, and Lisa (Joe Aiello), as well as grandchildren Kristin, Jase, Benjamin, Siena, and Matteo, Christiano, and Julia. Also grieving his death are his siblings John (Gladys), Larry (Rosalie), Mary Anne (Don Telfer), and Carol (Dale Bergermann), his sisters-in-law Maureen, Liz, and Paulette (Blair), and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins, in addition to members of Joan's family. He was predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Mary, his brothers Richard, George, Bernard, and Elmer, his sister-in-law Emma, and several of Joan's family. Ed was born January 15, 1940, in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, the third of nine children. He was raised on the family farm nearby and attended a country school for his elementary education. He received his high school education at St. Peter's College, Muenster before joining the monastery and attending Saint John's University in Minnesota, where he obtained a B.A. before determining this career to not be his calling. Ed then took employment briefly as a social worker with the Government of Alberta in Calgary, which led to pursuing an M.S.W. from the University of Ottawa. He returned to his home territory for a position in Saskatchewan Public Health at Saskatoon Mental Health Services. Being involved there in organizing collaborative service across government divisions, he was selected for the position of Regional Director of Mental Health Services, Medicine Hat to develop both adult and children's mental health services in the region and to serve on the board of the Community Resource Centre. Before leaving this position, he oversaw the local clinic's achievement of accreditation by the Canadian Council on Hospital Accreditation. Ed enjoyed a brief career in the banking world, serving initially as a board member and president of the Medicine Hat Savings and Credit Union. He then assumed those roles at the provincial level and briefly accepted the role of acting CEO in the central office before moving to his long and fulfilling career as a realtor. For many years, most Saturday and Sunday afternoons found Ed holding an open house. He had a strong sense of community and loved the opportunity that his real estate career afforded him for meeting and engaging with many people before health concerns forced his retirement this summer. A steadfast member of the Catholic Church, Ed endeavored to serve it throughout his lifetime on various committees and in various roles, most observably as an usher. For the merge of St. Mary's, Christ the King, and St. Joseph's churches, he was keenly involved in the sale of properties, acquisition of the new location, and planning of the transition to Holy Family Parish. Ed attained lifetime membership as a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed membership, at different times, in a number of service clubs including the United Commercial Travellers, Loyal Order of Moose, and Kiwanis. Ed enjoyed playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, golfing, Tim Hortons visits, and watching sports, particularly hockey. He delighted in establishing a tradition of delivering the Christmas message in packages prepared for his many patrons and otherwise to all he met. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday, January 2nd from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10:00 to 10:55 a.m. Family and friends will gather for prayers in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. A private family interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery.
