1934 ~ MARVIN SULZ ~ 2019
Marvin Sulz of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Jeanne passed away peacefully at the Carmel Hospice in St. Joseph’s Home on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at the age of 85. Marvin leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 63 years, Jeanne, their sons: Aaron (Jill), Bing (Pam) and Carey (Kim), their grandchildren: Brendan (Kerry), Kaley (Joel Graham), Keaton, Elliott, Hannah (Michael Ralston), their great-grandchildren: Shea and Quinn, his sister: Beatrice (Pete) Hirsch, his brother: Stanley (Gail) Sulz, his in-laws: Grant Curtis, Arden (Karen) Erman, and numerous nieces and nephews. Marvin is predeceased by his parents, Edward and Natalia Sulz, his sister, Lillian Kohls, his in-laws, Ben and Annie Erman, and Jeanne’s siblings, Vern (Eileen) Erman, and Joanne Curtis.
Marvin was born September 12, 1934 on the Sulz family farm near Golden Prairie, a 1/2 mile south of Johnny Bosch’s. Marvin grew up on the farm and they spent the winters working in Medicine Hat. In the fall, Marvin and his friend, Dennis Mayer would go out into the river hills south of Medicine Hat to catch wild horses. They spent the winter breaking their horses to sell for a little extra cash.
In 1953, Marvin graduated from high school in Golden Prairie. His first job was at the Bank of Montreal. Starting out was difficult, so Marvin supplemented his income by playing pool at the local pool hall. He prided himself as a pool shark, and joked that he could earn more money playing pool than working at any job.
From 1955-1967, Marvin worked for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in Abbey, Battrum, and Vanguard, Saskatchewan. On June 1, 1956, Marvin and Jeanne were married in Golden Prairie. They began their family with Aaron being born in Cabri in 1957, Bing in 1958 and Carey in Vanguard in 1961. Raising three young boys was a very busy joy. One day, Jeanne called Marvin at the elevator. She needed help because two of the curious boys had wandered off and she could not find them. Marvin joined the search, and they even phoned the train station, stopping the train in the next town. An hour later, the boys were found at the local hotel, unharmed.
In June of 1967, Marvin and Jeanne bought the King George Hotel in Burstall, Saskatchewan. Opening the hotel on the first day was a hair-raisingly busy experience. Marvin and Jeanne worked hard to restore the hotel and build a successful business. They also began to farm in Golden Prairie in 1969. During these years, there were many long days; Marvin and the boys would go to Golden Prairie to farm, leaving Jeanne to run the hotel on her own. Through their success and hard work, Marvin and Jeanne were able to purchase the Jake and Annie Erman farm in Golden Prairie, and the family moved there on August 14, 1972. Marvin and Jeanne shared their love for the farm with their children and grandchildren through the years. Marvin especially enjoyed watching the crops as they grew, calving time – where he would walk the pasture 50 times a day checking his calves, and of course, there is nothing as beautiful as harvest on the farm. Marvin instilled a love for the farm, building good character and a strong work ethic into his three boys and later, Brendan as they worked together on the farm. Although Marvin and Jeanne retired to Medicine Hat in the spring of 1996, Marvin continued to work on the family farm, and helped to take off the last crop when he was 80 years old. The Sulz family farm continues and was honoured with a Century Family Farm Award in 2018.
In retirement, Marvin and Jeanne loved joining the community of Medicine Hat and especially the Meadow Lands Estates. Marvin and Jeanne were adventurous, travelling south for many winters and taking many vacations around the world, including Europe, Israel, China, Mexico, The Ukraine, Australia and New Zealand.
Most of all, Marvin cherished his family. He loved spending time with family and splurged for many family vacations so the family could be together. There was lots of laughter shared through family pool tournaments, water-balloon volleyball and watching Pa as he tried to take up water-skiing at the age of 65. Fond memories also include Marvin and Jeanne’s 50th wedding anniversary in Hawaii, where the entire family gathered to surf, sun and celebrate. Cheering on their grandchildren as they grew and in their activities was another favorite way for Marvin and Jeanne to enjoy their time.
Through the years and in the many communities where Marvin and Jeanne lived and travelled, they have made many friends that they hold near and dear to their hearts. Marvin and Jeanne loved welcoming family and friends into their home, and enjoyed serving and being a part of each community they lived in. Marvin served on numerous boards and community organizations through the years. He was also an avid sportsman. He loved curling, especially with his boys, playing ball, fishing, and golfing. Marvin loved to joke around, and he maintained his sense of humour right to the end at St. Joseph’s Hospice.
The family of Marvin Sulz would like to thank friends and family for their unwavering support. Thank you to the many doctors and health care workers at the Medicine Hat Hospital and the St. Joseph’s Hospice for their tremendous compassion and care.
In lieu of a funeral service, a Celebration of Life will take place in Marvin’s honour at a later date. To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to:

CINDY LaROCHELLE BENDER
1942 ~ 2019
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Cindy Mae (Schaefer) LaRochelle Bender, loving partner of Ron Bender, announce the peaceful passing of Cindy at the Riverview Care Centre, into the loving arms of her heavenly father and those who have gone on before her, on Wednesday Nov. 27th, 2019, at the age of 77 years, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Cindy was predeceased by her husband, Guy LaRochelle; her siblings, Marilyn and Richard; her parents, May and John Schaefer and her brothers in-law, Leo, John, Jules, Brian, Gerry, Ron, and sister in-law, Terry. Cindy is survived by her loving partner, Ron Bender and her children, Chérie (Trent) Robbins, Steve (Kim) LaRochelle, Éleese (Rob) Aitken, and Joël (Mel) LaRochelle; her grandchildren, Nat, Ali, Gabe, Abby, Josée, Justene, Angela, Jordan, Trevor, Charlie; her brother, Brian (Mary-Lyn) Schaefer, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Cindy had interests ranging from curling, gardening, working with Ron at the farm, and enjoying her time at the lake, which was one of her favourite places to be in the summer. Cindy was an avid curler and played with many different people and teams over the years. She could often be heard yelling “sweep” or “hard” at curling events, while she was making one of her fancy shots. Her green thumb was proven with Ron at the farm, when growing her massive garden full of vegetables and flowers. Cindy also always found time to chase after her other passion, which was watching her grandchildren play the sports they loved, and she would frequently travel to different communities to cheer them on. Cindy valued education and a strong work ethic. She taught Drivers Education for years, and when she was not driving with the students in the car, she was driving them in the school bus to different destinations, either on her regular school run or for extra-curricular events. She also coached many of these students, including her own girls to volleyball championships throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan, and often drove the bus to get them there. Cindy (Mom) was always active, always engaged, and always involved with the people she loved and could not have done it without the great support of her friends from the communities of Richmound, Hilda and Medicine Hat. The Family would like to thank all of the people who have supported our Mom through the years. Mom was who she was because of the people in these great communities. We would also like to thank Riverview Care Centre for looking after Mom in the last few years. Cindy (Mom) (Mamérè) will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren and all who knew her. Mom was our rock in the great times and the tough times. We are all a reflection of her strength, joy and love for life! The Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. Private Interment will take place at Ponteix Cemetery, Ponteix, Saskatchewan on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 10:30 a.m (11:30 SK time). Memorial flowers may be directed to Cook Southland Funeral Chapel and memorial donations in Cindy’s name may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan or Alzheimers Society of Alberta, 201, 770 – 6 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4J6.
