1925 ~ ISOBEL SRUBOWICH ~ 2019
Passed away on July 22, 2019. Ms. Isobel Juanita Srubowich of Medicine Hat at the age of 94 years. She was born in Medicine Hat on June 28, 1925. She leaves to mourn her passing three children, Tara (Mike Rackham) Higgins of Winnipeg, MB; Tonia (Bruce) Morgan of Ottawa, ON; and Stephen (Connie Johnson) Srubowich of Medicine Hat, AB. She is mourned by seven grandchildren, Richard (Samantha) Kaus of Cleavleys,U.K., Kyle Brinkley (Dayna Evans) of Brandon, MB and Katrina Rackham of Winnipeg, MB; Natasha Pedro (Art Bowles) of Ottawa, ON and Justin Pedro of Gatineau, PQ; and Danielle and Cameron Srubowich of Medicine Hat, AB. And also by two great-grandchildren, Mila Rose and Zoey Belle Pedro of Gatineau, PQ. Ms. Srubowich is also survived by relatives in Ontario, Scotland, England and Australia. She will be deeply missed by her grey companion cat Grady, 12. Mom completed all her schooling in the Hat attending Toronto Street School, Earl Kitchener and graduating from Alexandra School. During her childhood years in the river valley she learned to swim in the river, and skate on it during cold months. She was an avid dancer and received three years of piano lessons. She also became one of the first Hat women to take welding lessons. In her 50's she took Spanish lessons at the Hat college. In 1951 she adventurously drove up the new and rugged Alaska Highway deep into the Yukon. The following year, she boldly turned her wheel down to Oakland, California. After successfully graduating from the Garbutt Business College, she held a number of secretarial positions in Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and CFB Suffield. Amongst her notable positions were at the Canada Employment office, lawyers, Medicine Hat public school division and Defence Research Establishment Suffield on two occasions. She lived the majority of her life in Medicine Hat but lived briefly in Lethbridge and Calgary. Mom was a strong advocate for animals and their protection and rights. She had countless pet dogs and cats over her lifetime. She was a voracious reader and had a wide range of literary interests running from her love of animals to the Far North, China and European history. Ms. Srubowich was predeceased by her parents, mother Amy Williamson, 84, in 1969 and father Bill Williamson, 96, in 1985. She was also predeceased by her husband Alex Srubowich passed away in 1994. The memorial service will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Friday, July 26th, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Humane Society or to The Salvation Army. 1933 ~ SOLOMON RUFF ~ 2019
Solomon (Sol) Ruff, 86, of High River, Alberta, passed away peacefully at High River Hospital on June 16, 2019. Born on March 25, 1933, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and raised in Burstall, Saskatchewan, Sol was the youngest child of Jacob and Minnie Ruff (nee Moser). He is lovingly remembered by his two children, Craig and Chris; his grandchildren, Janae and Dannica; his sister, Frieda; and a host of other family and close friends. Sol was pre-deceased by his loving wife Marie; his brothers Alfred, Ed, and Walter; and his sisters, Martha, Len, and Helen. Following a short time with the Air Force, Sol began his life-long career working with the Canadian Pacific Railway. This career saw him frequently moving around southern Alberta and British Columbia over the next 35 years. It was in the town of Stettler, Alberta where he met his future bride, Marie, and they married, in Medicine Hat, on October 31, 1964. Their sons, Craig and Christopher, came along in 1969 and 1972 respectively. Sol enjoyed playing and watching a wide variety of sports, including hockey, baseball, football and curling. He was happiest when on fishing trips with friends and family. He enjoyed travelling and visiting new places in Canada, the USA and Europe. Giving back to the community was important to him and he volunteered with many charitable organisations, most notably the Elks of Canada. With the Elks he was heavily involved in organising a cross-Canada charity run to help raise money and awareness for children with hearing impairments. Sol will always be remembered as a man who was dedicated to his family and friends. No matter where his career would take him, he would always make time to visit his parents, siblings, cousins and friends every year. His home was always open to visitors and everyone was made welcome. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held at ST. PETER LUTHERAN CHURCH, 758 – 8th Street SE, on Saturday, July 27th, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Shane Hein officiating. Interment will follow at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery, 5160 Gershaw Drive SW. Jenith Ann Plaksey (Vetter) of Cypress County, passed away on Friday, July 19th, 2019 in Medicine Hat, Alberta after a brief battle with cancer and underlying conditions at the age of 70 years. DON SCOTT
1952 ~ 2019
Donald Mitchell Scott, beloved husband of Verna (nee Brodin), passed away at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice on Sunday, July 21, 2019, at the age of 66 years. Along with Verna, Don leaves to cherish his memory his children, Catherine Scott (Les Muhlbeier), Stuart (Lisa) Scott; grandchildren, Adyson and Easton; sister, Valerie (Dave) Luyten; brother, Doug (Rita) Scott as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Don grew up on Riverside exploring the river and playing hockey at the local rink. As he got older, he enjoyed working alongside his dad at S.F. Scott MFG. In 1975, he married Verna and they later became parents to Catherine and Stuart. Don took great pride in building the family business each day. On weekends, he loved hunting, fishing and gardening, but most of all, spending time with his family. In recent years, he cherished his time on the farm and the community around him. Don enjoyed making people laugh and touched everyone with his generosity and kindness. He will be dearly missed and remembered forever. Mrs. Donna Elaine Main (nee Fancourt), beloved wife of John, passed away in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at the age of 64 years. Along with John, Donna leaves to cherish her memory two children and their families: son, John (Tracy) and their children, Trevor, Ethan and Catlyn; daughter, Corrina (Jay) Ryder and their children, Jacina and Justin. Her memory will also live on in the hearts of her mother, Kay Delorme; brothers, Don (Carol) Fancourt, Dale (Sylvia) Fancourt and David (Darlene) Fancourt; Donna’s favorite nephew, Andrew as well as numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her father, Bob Fancourt and her step-father, Bill Delorme. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those whose lives she touched. Mrs. Lenora Doreen Hummel, beloved wife of the late Mr. Walter Hummel, passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at the age of 85 years. Lenora leaves to cherish her memory, her children; Brian (Debbie) Hummel and Lynett (Brent) Getz; grandchildren, Kerrie (Devon) Senft, Dustin Hummel, Chad Hummel, Vincent (Krista) Van Dam and Amy Van Dam (Devon Sinclair); great grandchildren, Emily Senft, Isabell Senft, Lincoln Van Dam and Ezekiel Van Dam; brother, Allen Guthmiller and sister-in-law, Evelyn Guthmiller as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Edwin and Anne Guthmiller; her husband, Walter Hummel; sister, Edline Klientnecht; brother, Vern Guthmiller and her son, Rodney Hummel. She was raised in the Hilda area and made this community home until moving to Medicine Hat in 1992. Lenora loved to garden, bake and spend time with her family. She prepared and cooked the most delicious food and could make a feast out of anything. Lenora had the gift of hospitality and all who met her were greeted with the most kind, sincere and beautiful smile. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grand-mother and friend who loved unconditionally. Lenora loved the Lord and her faith carried her throughout life. She has left behind a legacy of love and will be deeply and dearly missed.
