CATHERINE (PEGGY) HAAS

Catherine (Peggy) Margaret McMorran Chalifoux Haas formerly of Bindloss, Alberta passed away peacefully on May 29, 2019 at the age of 96 in Rimby Alberta. She loved a good time with all, treasured her family and adored animals, particularly horses who reciporcated her affections. Peggy attributed her long life to eating Saskatoon pies made with "Real Lard" and running foot races as a child to earn money. The world lost a true gem with her passing.
Peggy was born on December 22, 1922 in Empress to Hendrica (Harriet) Maria Antonia Cornelia Laden (co-founder of the Empress Cottage Hospital) formerly of Tilburg, Holland and the Bercail Ranch in Hedgeville, Montana. Her father was John McMorran (the first settler of Bindloss and author of "The History of the Forks and Empress") formerly of Strawlaw Cottage in Biggar, Scotland.
Immediate family survivors include one son, Rick Chalifoux (Sandy) of Rimby Alberta, and one daughter, Dr. Zona Chalifoux of Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as seven grandchildren: Damara, Grey and Lisa Chalifoux (Rick), Tammy Petrin and Carrie Buzunis (Kirk), and Keith and Nikara Feasey (Zona). Additional blessing in Peggy's life were her seven great grandchildren and many closer nieces and nephews.
Peggy also leaves to mourn her loss two very special sisters, Dale (Merv) Ochitwa of Medicine Hat and Jessica (Sue) Berrow of Powell River BC, and one brother, Alexander (Sandy) McMorran of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta and one sister in Law, Mae McMorran.
Peggy was predeceased by one son, Kirk Chalifoux (2010), and both of her husbands, Wallace Haas (2001) and Lawrence Chalifoux (1976). Her brothers, Charlie McMorran and John (aka Bud or Jack) McMorran, Klara McMorran and cherished brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harvey and Betty Haas also predeceased her.
As the oldest child, Peggy learned to plow the fields with horses, collect buffalo chips for fuel and act as the defacto head of the household when her father was away working. With her siblings, she walked miles to school and country dances, chased jack rabbits for food and made candy with "ill gotten goods" from the kitchen and the milk cow.
Despite of her isolated childhood, Peggy graduated a grade twelve diploma from the Forks High School, Quite a feat in those days! At the age of twenty three she joined the Canadian Armed Forces and rose to the rank of Lance Corporal in the Quarter Master stores. In her words, Peggy said, "I never had to speak twice."
When the war ended, Peggy married fellow soldier, Lawrence Chalifoux, with whom she had her three children, Zona, Rick, and Kirk. In 1950 Peggy moved back to Bindloss to her mothers farm. Then she worked at the Empress Lumber Yard in Bindloss and for Franklin and Jean Rogers before moving to the Emil Wahl place and marrying her high school sweetheart, Wallace Haas. Wallace and Peggy, how can one visualize one of the team without thinking of the other. Together they raised three children and turned a quarter section of Hudson Bay land into a thriving farming and cattle operation encompassing several other properties. Hard work was punctuated with many fun filled days spend picnicking at Sandy Point, playing cards with the friends, hosting massive three day family reunions, camping at Elk Water, visiting family across Canada and wintering at Zona's place in Virginia. Here, Peggy and Wallace became "hobby Farmers" each with their own favorite "Homebred" foal and Jack Russel terrior. Peggy moved to Medicine Hat and lived in a house they had bought, eventually moving to Chinook Village, where she spend many years until moving to Rimby.
Peggy's request, a celebration of her life will be held on July 24th, 2019 from 2 to 4 PM at the Chinook Village. Peggy wished to have her family and friends gather together to lift a "cup of hot water", share stories and reconnect with each other. Internment will be private and without a traditional service. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorial donations be made to the Medicine Hat SPCA at 55 SouthWest Dr. S.W. T1A 8E8

YEAST

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Gerald Henry Yeast, beloved husband and best friend of Linda (Lyndy) and father to Mark (Autumn) announce his passing on Saturday July 13, 2019 at age 72 years. Gerald was born on December 17, 1946, second child to Henry(†) and Eva (†). He enjoyed a loving, fun-filled family life with siblings: Alice (†), Tim (†), Bill (Shannon), Brenda (Ivan), and Cindy (Glenn (†), along with their families. Gerald married Lyndy Lecuyer on September 8, 1973 and he was welcomed into a big family: in-laws, Lynn (†) and Madeleine, and brothers and sisters, Sandra (Jim), Buzz (Terry-Lou) (Connie †), J.B., Sherry (Tom (†), Bug, Dolly (David), Doogie (Kathy) and Fritz (Danette), and their families. In 1984, Gerald and Lyndy were blessed with a son Mark, and he was so fortunate to have had a close bond, seeing each other on a daily basis. Dad never missed a hockey or ball game, or practice, and in later years enjoyed going for 'coffee' at the Green Room with Lyndy and Mark. When Autumn came into our lives, Gerald got the daughter he never had. He was so proud of Mark and Autumn, and although he grumbled about 'rabbit sitting' he enjoyed looking after Lucy, Snickers, Pixie and Melvin (†). His constant furry companion for the past 13 years, Contiki Cat, misses him. Gerald grew up in Portreeve, Saskatchewan, and moved to Medicine Hat in 1969. He was a welder and worked at Wheatland Sales in Sceptre, Witke Iron Works, Western Co-operative Fertilizers, and Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. He enjoyed watching sports, particularly Saskatchewan Roughriders, Toronto Blue Jays, and Raptors. At Gerald's request, no funeral. If friends desire, memorial donations to SPCA or Sceptre Cemetery Memorial Fund.
