1942 – LAVERNE RETELBACH – 2019
After a swift battle with cancer, Laverne Retelbach slipped away peacefully on April 28, 2019. Laverne was predeceased by his parents Albert and Augusta Retelbach. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Carol-Lyn Retelbach, Laurel (Steve Van Dam) and Jodi (Bruce MacKay); his grandchildren Aidan, Megan, Josh (Van Dam); Norah and Noelle (MacKay); the mother of his children Dorothy Bender; his sister Sheila (Ken) Chisholm and their family. Laverne was blessed to have spent his last years with his loving and supportive companion Verba Hallahan. A proud and dedicated Hilda farmer, Laverne carried farming and the land in his blood until the end. He played slowpitch with the Hilda Bears and his Redcliff CB Radio Club call sign was “Alberta Bobcat”. After moving to Medicine Hat, many of his days were spent catching up on current news with his friends and neighbors at Levinson’s Music and the Meadowlark Village Club House. Country music and dancing was a true and deep passion which brought him great joy. Laverne was well known for his kind, charismatic personality and quick smile. He always had a witty comment at the ready. At his request, a private family time of remembrance will be held. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. HERTZ
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brian William Hertz on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the age of 57 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Sharlene and two sons, Brendan (Kristy Dewald) of Medicine Hat and Adam (Masha Scheele) of Edson. He also leaves to cherish his memory his mother Betty Hertz of Medicine Hat, two sisters, Terry (Quentin) Fauth of Richmound and Sharon (Tim) Klassen of Calgary; one brother David Hertz of Medicine Hat; Sharlene’s parents Val and Bea Wickenheiser and her family; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father John Hertz. Brian grew up in Burstall and moved away in his late teens to play hockey at Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan. He then played a few seasons with the Swift Current Broncos. He met and married Sharlene in Medicine Hat and they recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Brian worked at Methanex for many years before starting his own business, Brovac Mobile Vacuum Services, in 2000. He proudly grew the company from a one-man show to 25 employees with a current fleet of 15 trucks located throughout Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. Brian’s dynamic personality was a testament to the saying “big things come in small packages”. He lived his life to the fullest and was always young at heart. He enjoyed fishing, hockey, baseball, football, jet skiing, snowmobiling and golfing but the most important thing to him was his family. Nothing made him more proud than seeing his boys grow up to be the men they are today. Brian you are loved by many, will be missed beyond words, and will live in our hearts forever. Family and friends will gather for prayers in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. A private family interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. PHILLIPS, GUY DEAN
1966 – 2019
Guy Dean Phillips a loving husband and father, amazing friend and a natural athlete passed peacefully with his family by his side in Okotoks on April 26, 2019 from brain cancer at the age of 53.
Guy is survived by his wife Crystal, daughter Tomi-lyn Berard (Coltin), son Trey, mother Peggy, brother Rob (Yekssy), mother-in-law Evelyn Fried, sister-in-law Sheri Fried, and nephew Mateo Fried. Guy was predeceased by his father Wesley and father-in-law Bert Fried.
Born February 13th, 1966 in Regina SK. Guy spent his early years growing up in SK and BC then moving to Brooks, AB at the age of 12. Guy had a passion for sports and even though he made a career out of hockey, very often you could find him with a racquet or golf club in his hands. 1987 was a special year for Guy, winning the Memorial Cup with the Medicine Hat Tigers and more importantly the year he met his wife. Medicine Hat became home for Guy, where he and his family would spend summers during his professional hockey career. Guy and his wife traveled to many states as part of their hockey life. Their children were both born during the hockey season, Tomi-Lyn in Hersey, PA and Trey in Richmond, VA. In 1994 they headed to Europe where he played in Italy and Germany until 1999. Guy and his family have a special place in their heart for the 3 seasons in Crimmitschau, Germany where many fond memories and lifelong friendships were made.
After his hockey career Guy moved into coaching first his kids, then onto Midget hockey along with his hockey schools. During this time Guy began a new chapter starting his own business in the coffee industry. He was truly a jack of all trades; tree moving, concrete finishing, electrical and construction, even some farming. In 2007, Guy moved with his family to Okotoks to manage a project in the construction industry. 2 years later moved into sales in oil and gas. Whether he was downtown, in the field, in the locker room or on the course he enjoyed relationship building and the friendships that resulted.
Guy’s family and friends were always a priority. He loved to laugh and have fun and might even have shared a story or two. Always carried himself with class, integrity, and kindness. Guy was a true Gentleman.
In Leu of flowers please donate to your local minor hockey association or the Foothills Country Hospice, Box 274, Okotoks AB, T1S 1A5. Arrangements in care of Snodgrass Funeral Homes Ltd. (Okotoks) 403 938 3111.
