MELVIN JAMES MOGCK
January 18, 1938 to March 24, 2019
Ever Loving – Ever Loved
We give thanks for the life of our treasured husband, father, papa, great grandfather, Melvin Mogck, who passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at the age of 81 years. We will miss his gentle soul, loving words of wisdom and sense of humour. Melvin was born on a very cold January day in 1938. That day must have had something to do with his dislike of snow, because he didn’t like having to play around in it all his life. And, wouldn’t you know it, the morning when he passed away, snow was falling! Dad’s cherished memory will remain in the hearts of his wife, Muriel, children – Wanda (John Reinholdt) and Dale Mogck (Lorinda); granddaughter Corryn Mogck (Matthew Grandy), great grandson, Kyler Fountain, great granddaughter due end of June and grandson Jordan Mogck (Kendra). Melvin is survived by his sister Vivian Waldbauer. He was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Erna Mogck, brothers Garry Mogck and Charles Mogck, brother-in-law Laurence Waldbauer, in-laws Henry and Molly Maerz and brother-in-law Clarence Maerz. Melvin had fond memories of going along with his father hauling grain or working in the field before he was of school age. He was quite young when he had to help with chores – feeding chickens, pigs, geese, turkeys and milking cows. They were always quite fortunate to have a good dog that would bring in the milk cows for them so they didn’t have to walk to get them. Melvin started school in April 1944 at McKay Creek. He played ball at school and his team took championship at Sports Day in Elkwater three years running. For many years before he got married, he was quite involved in community affairs with Graburn Unifarm Association, Community Hall and Walsh Cattle Marketing Association, running alleys at cattle sales. His time with Walsh Cattle Marketing involved many positions, working his way up from a worker to president. This period in his life showed his dedication to the community and his career as a farmer and rancher. On November 29, 1969, he married Muriel Maerz of Three Hills, Alberta and had two children, Wanda Mae born August 19, 1971 and Dale James born March 31, 1974. They were really looking forward to their 50th this coming November. He loved playing with his kids any time he could get. They both took music lessons, played ball and graduated from Irvine High School. Melvin and his family attended Memorial Evangelical Church in Medicine Hat to get spiritually fed as they congregated with relatives and friends on Sundays and special occasions. In 1971, a few months before Wanda was born, Melvin changed his lifestyle to follow Jesus. He also began a weekly Bible study and prayer group in the community that lasted for 20 years. In 1996, amidst rising farming expenses and costs, Melvin decided to sell the farm and ranch and Melvin and Muriel moved to Medicine Hat. In 2001, Melvin joined the Gideons involved with handing out New Testament Bibles to students in Grade 5. He also played men’s senior slow pitch, golfed, bowled, and worked at a landfill. He always enjoyed meeting and working with people. In 2011, Melvin and Muriel moved into Chinook Village where he enjoyed serving on some committees including being a fire warden. He enjoyed Tim Horton’s coffee and Timbits with his German friends. He also played shuffleboard and enjoyed many Skipbo games with friends and family. A special thank you to the nurses and staff on 2 North, 4 West, 5 West, and St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice for their awesome care of Melvin these last 3 months. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held in River Valley Community Church, (1101 Queen Street SE) on Friday, March 29, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ken Roset and Pastor Thomas Miller officiating. A private interment will take place prior to the funeral service. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to The Gideons (International in Canada) 3123 15th Ave SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 8K1. To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to:
