1932 ~ LOU FYTEN ~ 2018

Llewellyn Leo "Lou" Fyten of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of the late Eleanor Fyten passed away on Friday, September 14th, 2018 at the age of 86 years. Lou leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Darrel Fyten of Calgary and Lorne Fyten of St. Paul; daughters, Ardith (Randy) Akerstrom and Donna (Tim Yamazaki) Cayenne of Medicine Hat; seven grandchildren, Chantel Akerstrom, Kyle (Kayla) Akerstrom, Jesse Cayenne, Justin Cayenne, Matthew Stokes, Nicole (Brandon Yamazaki) Jobling and Vanessa Yamazaki; one great-grandchild, Cameron; three brothers, Edmund (Vera) Fyten, Marvin (Ruth) Fyten and Adrian (Barbara) Fyten; one sister, Leola (Ken) Harde; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Lou was predeceased by his loving wife, Eleanor; his parents, Edward and Marie Fyten; two brothers, Robert and Elwood; and one daughter-in-law, Sylvia Fyten. Lou was born in Swallwell, Alberta in 1932. He spent his military years in the Airforce and then went on to work in many mechanical jobs. Lou was a friend to all and will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him. The Funeral Service will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1 Dunmore Road SE, on Saturday, September 29th, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Dallas Hjorth officiating. Anna Marie (Getz) Becker of Medicine Hat passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at the age of 84 years, she leaves us to reunite with her late husband Lloyd and her daughter Tammy Koi. Anna leaves to cherish her memory her children, Wayne (Lorna) Becker, Karen (Cliff) Janzer, Ryan (Lana) Becker, Bev (Tim) Sehn, Susan (Blaine) Walburger; son-in-law Bruce Koi; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters, Martha Hegg and Frances Anderson and special friend Ed Pryce. She was also predeceased by her parents, Anton and Eva Getz; four brothers, Nick, Chris, Anthony, Valentine; two sisters, Eva and Barbara. Growing up our house was always full of family and friends, the coffee pot was always on. As us kids grew older, mom and dad never knew who they would find sleeping on the floor or couches, as we always seemed to bring cousins and friends home with us. Even when we left home, friends continued to stop by for coffee and mom’s baking or they would just honked their horn when they drove by. As per Mom’s request there will be no formal funeral. A private family service will be held at a later date. Ethel Marie Begg, beloved wife of the late Stan Begg, passed away at the Bow Island Health Centre on Monday September 24, 2018, at the age of 82 years. She leaves to cherish her memory children, Donna, Darren (Gerrie), Dana (Shaun) and Jennifer (Jason); two grandchildren, Krysten (Taylor) and Karli (Eric); one brother, Ernest (Arlene) Zorn as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ethel was predeceased by her husband, Stan; parents, Frank and Beulah Zorn and her sisters, Grace, Hazel and Janet. A Celebration of Ethel’s Life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, September 28, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. with Major Murray Jaster officiating. A time of fellowship will follow thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility. Private interment will take place at the the Bow Island Cemetery. JOAN MARY SHOESMITH

Jan. 23, 1932 – Sept. 18, 2018
Joan Mary (Miller) Shoesmith passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 in Blairmore, AB.
Joan leaves to cherish her memory her children, Pamela (Keith) Newton, Erin Matthews, Geoff (Carol) Shoesmith; grandchildren, Mathew (Laura Sou) Newton, Josh Newton, Jordan (Megan McLean) Matthews, Joey Matthews, Katie (Mark) Ernst, Nicole (Ryan) Seleski, Kristina (Cam Cooke) Shoesmith, David Shoesmith; and great grandchildren, Devon, Dominik, Derek, Dylan and Skylar. Joan also leaves behind her identical twin, Jean Depper and sister, Vicki Olsen; sisters-in-law, Margorie Hastey and Fran Miller; brother–in-law, Wally Green; along with numerous nieces and nephews, as well as special friends, John and Ingrid Hart and their children, Ashley and Lindsay.
Awaiting her with open arms in Heaven will be Joan’s husband and love of her life, J.C. (Chuck) Shoesmith; son-in-law, R.E. “Rick” Matthews; infant grandson, Joshua Luke Matthews; parents, Joe and Lila (Teske) Miller; her infant brother, John; as well as her brother, Robert; sisters, Gladys and Roma; her brothers-in-law, Roy and Jack; and sister-in-law, Jean Hay.
Joan was born into this world the first of 2 identical twins and third of 6 children in Thurso Quebec, but moved at an early age to Westboro (now a suburb of Ottawa) ON. Joan and Jean grew up in the heart of the Great Depression and the World War II era, but had nothing but fond memories of Westboro, visiting their Mom and Dad’s home area “back at the Blanche (Que)”, their childhood and the fun pranks that accompany being twins.
After High School Joan spent 9 yrs working at RL Crain Ltd as a bookkeeper and clerk, but after having children enjoyed a career as a stay at home Mom, always willing to pitch in and help the family finances with a part time career which included working as a Member Secretary on Parliament Hill and in the office at Carleton University during registration. Joan retired from the work force as a night clerk at the Best Western Motel in Medicine Hat.
Joan met Chuck in her early teens and although it took some work on Chuck’s part, she fell in love and they were married on June 14, 1952. They were blessed with 3 children and were together until Chucks passing on July 12, 1981. Joan and Chuck resided in Ottawa until Chuck transferred with RL Crain Ltd. to Medicine Hat in 1975. Joan continued on in Medicine Hat until moving to Blairmore, AB in 2009 where she enjoyed ending her days with the beautiful views she had of the Rocky Mountains.
Joan loved to travel going on numerous road trips touring Western Canada with Chuck and friends, but also enjoyed her time at the cottage on the Mississippi Lake. Later years she went on numerous trips and cruises with Jean and dearly loved either watching or having her grandchildren over to visit at home.
Joan had a lifelong involvement with the church and a faith that carried her through all of life’s ups and downs with grace and dignity. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Ottawa, later transferring to St Paul Lutheran Church in Medicine Hat. Chuck and Joan enjoyed their time spent with the youth group in Medicine Hat fostering many lifelong friendships with the kids they were involved with that continued until her passing.
The Funeral Service for Joan will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church (515 – Sprague Way SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta) on Saturday the 29th of September 2018 at 2:00pm with Pastor Ken Edel officiating. “super great and just got better”
It is with profound sadness that the family of Ron Gillett of Cold Lake announces his sudden passing on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at the age of 87 years.
Ron will be forever remembered and loved by his wife of 64 years and seven month: Ruth Gillett of Cold Lake, AB; four children: Heather (Liviu) Popovici of Burnaby, BC, Brian (Phyllis) Gillette of Cold Lake, AB, David Gillette of South Korea, Carolyn (Allan) Gerry of Edmonton, AB; seven grandchildren: Jenny, Jonathan, Michael, Jessica-Lynn, Chantelle, Wesley & Riley; six great grandchildren: Brook-lynn, Karrissa, Gabriel, Melikhi, Brodie & Jaiden; sister: Alberta Thompson of Medicine Hat, AB; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Ron was predeceased by his parents: Earl & Corabell Gillett; brother: Earl; sister: Grace.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Ron's life will be held at a later date.

RUTH "BUNNY" ULMER

May 21, 1925 ~ June 30, 2018
Ruth “Bunny” Louise Ulmer, beloved wife of the late Walter Ulmer, passed away in Lethbridge on Monday, July 30, 2018, at the age of 93 years following a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Medicine Hat, the oldest daughter of Justina and Benvenuto Bonin. This is where they lived before moving to Bow Island, Lethbridge and finally Calgary before returning to Lethbridge in 2003. We are comforted knowing that she is now once again with her “Honey”. She is survived by her children, Wayne (Jo) of Lethbridge, Rod (Carol) of White Rock, Barry (Marsha) of Edmonton and Wendy (Dave) of Calgary. Bunny was a proud grandmother to Tracey (Oral), Tara (Wes), Briea (Jaime) and Laurel (Trevor) all of Calgary. She was thrilled to be the great-grandmother of Charlotte, Gray and Trystan. Bunny is also survived by her sisters, Rose of Lethbridge and Norma of Calgary and her brothers, Norman and Ernie of Medicine Hat as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Graveside Memorial service will be celebrated at Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat, AB., on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to gather at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, AB., no later than 1:15 p.m. to join in the procession to Hillside Cemetery.
