MORLEY GRANT MYERS August 2, 1956 – June 16, 2018 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, son, brother, uncle and friend Morley Myers on Saturday June 16, 2018. The final steps of his journey were made in his garden on Salt Spring Island, in the arms of his beloved wife Isabelle, surrounded by a few close friends and, in spirit, the love of his family and of all those who knew him. Morley’s transformative journey brought him from struggle and pain to a sense of deep love and peace. Towards the end of his days, he said that he had hoped for a miracle but that on reflection, realized that the miracle had already happened. The miracle of healing for him was an overwhelming sense of unconditional love, a love so profound, that it gave him the courage and grace he needed to leave this world and to journey into eternity in peace.Left to cherish his memory is Morley’s beloved wife Isabelle Ma, his parents Sgt. Clarence (Skip) and Memory Myers. His sister Lynn Myers (Jay Bertrand), brother Larry (Sally) nephews and niece, Joel, Simon, Hannah and Stephen as well as several cousins and dear friends.
Morley Grant Myers was born on August 2, 1956 in Saskatoon, SK Having a military father Morley with his family moved frequently residing in McGivney N.B., Kamloops B.C., Camp Bouchard, QB until their final posting to Sufflield AB in the summer of 1967 at which time Skip his father took leave of military service.
After Morley graduated from Crescent Heights High School he furthered his education at SAIT University in Calgary where he took 2 years of mechanics. Once he was finished he remained in Calgary and worked in the construction trade for a number of years. Morley made friends wherever he went. His sense of humor and irresistible urge to play practical jokes provided many, many unforgettable stories which he loved to tell repeatedly and we all loved to listen to. He enjoyed restoring old cars like his 1946 Mercury Coupe and his 1953 Pontiac hearse. His eye for detail and creativity was always evident and became more predominant later in his life through his passion for sculpting. Morley returned to Medicine Hat briefly but in that time shared his talent in carpentry with the theatre community and after taking some courses in Social Work at the Medicine Hat College he worked in a group home that housed adults with special needs and taught them basic carpentry skills.
In 1988 Morley and his dog Akela packed up and left ‘the Hat’. He came to Salt Spring, fell in love with the island and never left. The creative environment he found there encouraged his evolution into the accomplished sculptor he became. His love for restoration continued as he brought new life to old boats one in particular named “Pud” and other vehicles for his fellow islanders. He was also a highly skilled carpenter who helped to build many beautiful island homes. An engaging and dynamic dancer, Morley was greatly involved in the island’s social dance community.
Morley excelled in and accomplished so many things in this life and other than his love and loyalty to his family and his friends, he will be remembered best for his endearing and boyish sense of humour, his love of pranks, his generosity and right to the end, his infectious laugh. “The cure for me was His beauty, the remedy for me was to love”. PAYNE Marjorie Rose Nancy Payne of Medicine Hat, passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at the age of 93 years, beloved wife of the late Norman Payne. She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Marilyn Tokamp, Diane Thauberger and Bev (Roger) Shatz; seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; one sister Frances Wagner as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Nora and Ernest Van; her husband Norman on November 30, 1975, one son Norman “Royce”, one brother, Sonny, three sisters, Shirley Brown, Phyllis Aaker and Joan Hattum. Marjorie’s family would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff on the Sunnyview wing of Sunnyside Nursing Home for the great care given to their mother for the last 15 years. A graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. with Major Murray Jaster officiating. TERRY OLMSTEAD 1958 ~ 2018
Mr. Terence Michael Olmstead passed away suddenly in Medicine Hat, Alberta at the age of 59 years. Terry chose the time and place of his passing and will be missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. A service will be held at a later date.
