1929 ~ CLIFFORD ALBERT “CLIFF” SMITH ~ 2017


Clifford Albert Smith of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Elsie Smith, passed away on Friday, July 14th, 2017 at the age of 87 years. Cliff leaves to cherish his memory his six children: Elaine (Randy) Jahnke, Terry (Gayle) Smith, Raymond (Paulette) Smith, Doug (Crystal) Smith, Donnie (Dixie) Smith, and Garry (Dawna) Smith; thirteen grandchildren, Jamie Jahnke (Jen McKenzie), Jannae (Scott) Bridgeman, Clint Jahnke, Tyler (Colleen) Smith, Mitchell (Shawna) Smith, Tianna Smith (Klint Kornfeld), Rachel Smith, Corey (Chantal) Smith, Duane Smith, Jayden Smith, Delaney Smith, Devan Smith ( Amy Halvorson), and Dakota Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Leo, Ellie and Gray, Hudson, Grant, Halle and Brett; one sister, Irene Shiels; two sister in-laws, Alice Smith and Melva Wallin; and numerous nieces and nephews. Cliff was predeceased by his father and mother, James and Alice Smith; in-laws, Earnest and Minnie Wallin; brother, Reg Smith; sister, Doris Gilchrist; sister in-law, Myrtle (Tootie) McIntosh: brother in-laws, Pete Shiels, Gordon Gilchrist, Frank Wallin, Norman Wallin and Morrison McIntosh; and grandchild Mathew Smith. Cliff was born in Tompkins, Saskatchewan, on July 29, 1929. He was raised in the Nadeville district south of Hazlet, Saskatchewan, and attended school at Honora School. Cliff met his future wife Elsie, at a dance at the White Craig School, and they were married April 25, 1951 in Medicine Hat. Cliff and Elsie continued to live on the Smith family homestead, south of Hazelet, operating the family farm and ranch. In 1976 they bought a ranch in the Mendham district and ranched there until 1994, when they retired to Medicine Hat. Throughout the years, Cliff was actively involved with horse and beef 4H clubs, coaching his son’s hockey teams, serving as a Councillor for the R.M., as well as serving on the board of the Leader Hospital. In Medicine Hat he volunteered at The Post and Hillcrest Church for many years. Cliff and Elsie made numerous trips to Cuba and took with them medical supplies, baseball gloves and dolls. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and fishing. Cliff participated in many trail rides such as the North West Mounted Police Trail Ride and the Centennial Trail Ride with his grandchildren. The Funeral Service will be held at Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church 3785 – 13th Avenue SE MEDICINE HAT, AB T1B 1J2, on Tuesday, July 18th, 2017 at 1:30 pm with Pastor Mark Bolender officiating. HUGH BEATON

13 September 1931 ~ 15 July 2017
Born and raised in Medicine Hat by Erna (Draudson) and J.R.(Jack) Beaton. In 1948, Hugh enlisted in the RCAF and became a flying instructor with the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He married Yvonne Clary on September 1, 1956. In 1966 Hugh earned a BSc in Business Administration from the University of San Francisco (Dean's List and Beta Gamma Sigma) and accepted membership in MENSA in 1970. He began a career in systems analysis in California and moved to Hawaii where he also acted as wage and salary negotiator for Castle and Cook. For five years he headed the Mensa society in Honolulu. Forever seeking new challenges, Hugh used his Realtor's license to successfully launch Harbor Realty. After retiring to Seattle, Hugh took a round-the-world cruise on a container ship. That led to a second trip to the smallest nation in the British Commonwealth, Tuvalu. While continuing to travel, Hugh lived in Calgary, Napa, Phoenix, back to Honolulu and Victoria before returning to his beloved Medicine Hat. He established the Hugh Campbell Beaton scholarship in Business Administration at Medicine Hat College. Hugh is the published author of "Animal Stories", his A to Z take on the secret lives of creatures. Predeceased by his parents and siblings: John Edward "Jack", Robert Malcolm "Bob" and B. Norene Beaton, while left to celebrate his life is sister Barbara Ross and the loving families of Jack and Bob. Throughout his life, Hugh was a kind and loving man. A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Tuesday, July 18th, 2017. WILF C. GERLACH

1928 ~ 2017
Mr. Wilfred C. Gerlach was born on October 28, 1928, in Rush Lake, SK and passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Sunday, July 16, 2017, at the age of 88 years. Left to cherish Wilf’s memory are his children, Wendy (Gabe) Kalmar and Kim Gerlach; grandchildren, Jennifer (Cley) Brotherton and Makhayla Kalmar and great- grandchildren, Ethan and Mishayla. Also left to treasure his memory are his three siblings, Jake, Ruby and Bernice. He was predeceased by his wife, Jackie in 1999. Wilf’s life will be celebrated with a service in Swift Current, SK at a later date.
