She later moved to Calgary to work for CNR, where she met John on New Year’s Eve. After a June wedding in 1956, they moved to Richmound, Saskatchewan to farm with his family. In 1964 they relocated to Burdett with the four oldest children to start a new farm and add two more children to the family.
Florence was active in the community and was always involved with the Grassy Lake CWL. For many years she volunteered with the Burdett Community Hall Auxiliary organizing and cooking countless suppers for weddings and other functions.
Florence was top bowler in both Bow Island and Taber leagues. She started bowling shortly after the Bowling Alley in Bow Island opened and continued weekly in Taber until her late seventies. Another favorite pastime was playing various card games and dominoes with her family and friends. She was very well read and self-educated reading at least one book a week.
She always loved to travel which was hard during the early years on the farm. After Florence and John retired from farming they began visiting family and friends around British Columbia and parts of the United States. After John passed away Florence took several trips and cruises, many with her sister Jean, visiting Hawaii, Alaska, Newfoundland, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Victoria and more.
Florence was a true farm wife; driving truck and tractor, chasing cows, raising her children and then helping with grandchildren. Finally, after thirty five years on the farm in Burdett, Florence and John moved to Signature Lane in Taber enjoying their retirement years surrounded by friends. After John passed in 2009, Florence continued to live at Signature Lane for a number years before moving to Clearview Lodge in Taber where she was with more friends. Florence spent her last two years at St. Michael’s Health Centre.

SYLVIA ROSE ELLIS
May 25, 1927 – December 17, 2016
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother GG, Sylvia Rose Ellis, who passed peacefully on Saturday, December 17, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society Home in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Sylvia was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on May 25, 1927, to Violet and Donald McBain. The family moved from Deer Park, BC to Loverna, Saskatchewan in 1931. Her Dad died when she was 5 years old and her mother raised Sylvia, her sister Florence, and brother Donald. Her extracurricular activities included tap dancing, acting, playing hockey on a female team and softball. Sylvia took her schooling at Loverna from 1933-1944 and took one year at the Collegiate in Saskatoon. In 1945, she began working as a telephone operator at Melfort, Saskatchewan then continued in this line of work in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan for two years, and also in Saskatoon for a short time. She became Supervisor at Swift Current for one year.
Sylvia married her sweetheart, Douglas Ellis, on October 21, 1950. They had many great years farming 5 miles NW of Marengo and together they raised three children – Ronald, Fay, and Elaine. Sylvia loved the farm and always raised chickens and turkeys. Neighbours would come for miles for a festive turkey. Her favourite things included taking meals to the field, driving the combine, gardening and helping Doug with the cows and other animals.
Music was a passion that Sylvia learned from her mother. She had a special touch and could play by note, or by ear. Many kids of the area would come after school for piano lessons. Sylvia played for The United Church and Anglican Church services, weddings and funerals. At Christmas time, the neighbour kids would come to practice carols for the Merid Christmas Concert.
Over the years, Sylvia enjoyed family trips to Turtle Lake, curling, square dancing, teaching Guides as well as Brownies. She devoted many hours to the School Board, Cemetery Clubs, and received a Life Membership of the Marengo United Church.
In 1983, Sylvia and Nelson Bingeman moved into a new home on his farmsite outside of Esther. They resided there until 1994 when she retired and moved to the Palm Villa Apartments in Oyen.
Sylvia played in a dance band for many years then formed ‘The Leftovers’ along with Nelson. Band members over the years included Jim Newton & Audrey Roswell, The Jorgensen’s (Ralph, Marvel, Bert, Gary and Joyce), George Bishoff and Ron Warrington.
Sylvia loved to travel. She and Nelson spent many winters going to Las Vegas in their motor home. She visited Nashville, Alaska, Hawaii, Baja, California, and a special trip to England with her granddaughter Melanie in 1994. In 2010, Sylvia moved into the Oyen Lodge, and in 2015 to the Medicine Hat Seniors Lodge.
We will miss her contagious laugh and most of all her willingness to play the piano for us. She loved to knit as well as crochet, and we will treasure her beautiful afghans. Sylvia was predeceased by her father, Donald McBain, in 1932; brother, Donnie McBain, in 1945; mother, Violet Hansen, in 1979; husband, Douglas Ellis, in 1979 and sister, Florence Goldsmith, in 1992.
Sylvia leaves to mourn: three children, seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. This includes her son Ronald & Judy Ellis and family: Chad Ellis; Crystal & Colin Metz, Rory and Samantha; Daughter Fay & Eric Walper and family: Melanie & Jason Peake, Triton and Kingston; Kirk & Jaclyn Walper, Austin and Lexi; and Leanne Walper; Daughter Elaine Bowman & Al and family: Douglas Bowman; Ashlee & Billy Miller, Lola, Peter and Henry; and good friend Nelson Bingeman; as well as many nieces, nephews and great friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Sylvia’s Birthday, May 25, 2017, at the Marengo Cemetery.
