BUTLER, ELIZABETH JANE (BETTY)

(Nee Taylor)
1919 – 2016
Betty Butler passed away peacefully on September 24, 2016 at the age of 97 years after a wonderful long life of caring for others. Mom (Nana) will be forever lovingly remembered by son Bill (Debra) of Edmonton, daughter Deborah (Ivor Ruste) of Calgary and grandchildren Jenelle (Brett Baumback), Stephanie Ruste (Mark Munro), Andrea Ruste (Jordan Wagner), Jeffrey Butler, and great-grandchildren Elise Baumback, Beau and Oliver Munro, as well as her sister Adele Bell of Kelowna, B.C. and her family. Betty is also survived by other relatives of the Taylor family. Betty was born in Medicine Hat on August 6th, 1919 to Samuel and Ruth Taylor and attended school there. She received her nursing training at the Vancouver General Hospital and graduated in 1941. Nursing came naturally to Betty, she was always caring and loved looking after people. She worked as a nurse in Medicine Hat, Spokane, Moose Jaw, Montreal and England. In 1943 Betty married Frank W. Butler (RAF) and they were married for 52 years until Frank’s passing in 1996. They loved music and were both active supporters of the Medicine Hat community. Betty was a passionate volunteer with the St. Barnabas Church, the Red Cross, VON, Medicine Hat Hospital Auxiliary, IODE, Medicine Hat Allied Arts, Rotary Music Festival, Medicine Hat Museum and the Historical Society. Betty enjoyed music and participated in several choirs including St. Barnabas Church choir and in the Armstrong Singers until she was 76. Betty moved to Edmonton for 7 years and then to Calgary for 10 years to be close to her family and active with her grandchildren. We are so blessed to have had such a caring and loving mother and Nana. We cherish the many wonderful memories and the journey we shared. Thank you to the care givers at Staywell Manor, Revera Mount Royal and Carewest Garrison Green for your compassion and dedication. Thank you also to the wonderful visitors from All About Seniors and Bonnie Brading. A family memorial service and interment in the family plot will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Medicine Hat.
