Mel was a very honest, loving, giving, and hard working man with a great sense of humor. He loved his wife and best friend of 58 years deeply as well as his kids, grandkids, and great grandchild. Mel had many interests and lived life to the fullest. He loved fishing, hunting (would tell you stories exactly where he hunted and what he got every time you would drive past a spot), dancing, cards, bowling, and curling. He was also very proud to take over the family operation that his grandfather had homesteaded in 1903, which is now being operated by 4th generation. Mel loved farming and his cattle which kept him busy.
Mel was very musical and could play many instruments at a young age. He played accordion for party's and dances and later on just for fun entertaining family and friends. He also played for the neighbourhood kids as well as his own, when they would square dance at the senior’s home.
Mel also had a love for boxing and helped Ev Nieman to teach some of the neighborhood boys to box.
Some of the jobs he took on over the years were, a director with 40 Mile Gas Co-op from the beginning, president of Cresday Grazing formed in 1964, president of Longfellow Community Hall and was still an active honorary member. He was also proud of being president of Southern Surface Rights for many years. He was very proud to go to battle for many farmers in arbitration cases.
Mel loved to help people out anyway he could. He was always there for his family and friends. We couldn’t have asked for a better husband, dad, PA, and friend. You will be greatly missed.
