SCHNEIDER

1922 – 2016

James “Jim” Harry Schneider of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 years on Tuesday, February 16, 2016. He leaves to cherish his memory two children, Carol (Jim) Hern of Bindloss and their children Jay Hern, Craig (BriAnne) Hern and their children Colton, Norah, Sam, Tyson, and Leanne (Scott) Fedyshen; Brian (Donna) Schneider and their children Lindy (Darrell) Archibald, their daughter Elise, Janay (Kyrk) Stenberg, and Rylan Schneider (Amy Weiss). Jim was predeceased by his parents Peter Jr. and Pauline, his wife Inga, three brothers and sisters-in-law Edwin (Annie), Alfred (Emma), Peter (Camilla), two sisters and brothers-in-law Alice (Lawrence) Lamb, Lillian (Jack) Noble, and two step brothers and their wives, Albert (Ella) Neubauer and Emil (Peggy) Neubauer. In 1903, Jim’s parents moved from Java, South Dakota to homestead in the Sentinel area, seventeen miles south of Irvine. He was born October 3, 1922 and was the youngest of six children. When Jim was eighteen months old his mother, Pauline died and nine months later his dad Peter Jr. married Caroline Neubauer. Two step bothers, Albert and Emil, came to live in the Schneider household. Jim attended the Sentinel School until Grade 9 and after finishing school worked at home and for neighbors Pink Eye Weiss and Johnny and Faye Beierbach. He then ventured farther from home working on a dairy farm at Blairmore and on a threshing crew in the Tilley area. The young men in the area were excited when a new young school teacher came to the district. Jim didn’t fall for the new teacher but was charmed by her girlfriend, Inga Nerland. In 1946, Jim acquired part of his dad’s farm, starting with three quarters of land, one bull and two cows. In 1947, Jim and Inga were married and Inga became the new school teacher at the Sentinel School working until Carol came along in 1951 and followed by Brian in 1954. In 1968, wanting to be closer to Medicine Hat, Jim purchased land at Pashley from his brother Alfred. Jim and Inga worked hard to establish a new ranch site. In 1980, they moved into Medicine Hat so that their son Brian and wife Donna could live on the ranch. Jim enjoyed living in town and was active in curling, golfing, bowling, playing cards, going to the Tiger hockey and Mavericks baseball games and he loved dancing. Jim and Harvey Good were two of the best dancers around! Living in town was handy to the ranch and to Brooks where he made his weekly business trips. For many years Jim and Inga were busy watching their six athletic grandchildren compete in a wide variety of sports events. Jim and Inga enjoyed travelling and went on various excursions and golf trips every winter. In 1999, they moved to a condo in Fairview Village and in 2009, to Norwood Grande and in 2014, Jim moved to Meadowlands. It was hard on Jim when Inga passed away on May 7, 2011. Being able to go down to play cards everyday in the Moose sure helped Jim to keep busy and gave him the opportunity to socialize with men and women of all different ages. This filled his days and kept him young. Jim was a sharp business man and had many successful endeavours in the agricultural industry. You could pretty well say that he didn’t completely retire until he quit doing the ranch books at the age of 83. He was a member of the Irvine Chinook Club, the Moose Lodge, the Elks, Connaught Golf Club and was on the committee that started the first Elkwater Rodeo. In the early eighties Jim and Harvey Good were on the curling team skipped by Bill Lastuka, that won the Canadian Senior Elks Championship. Jim was very fortunate to have good health until the age of 92 years. In his last year and a half in Meadowlands his health started to deteriorate and the days became long with more idle time. Jim was not use to this and it was a difficult adjustment for him. Jim had a good long life, made lots of friends and lived life to the fullest. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. The funeral service will be held at the Cypress Center on Monday, February 22, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend. A private family interment will take place prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Jim with a donation, may direct it to the Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation, (make cheques payable to MH & D Health Foundation) 666 5th Street SW, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 4H6 or online at http://www.InYourCommunity.ca. To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to: pattfh@telusplanet.net subject heading: Jim Schneider, or you may visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com and leave a message of condolence.
