John went to be with his Lord and Savior early Wednesday morning, February 10, at the age of 82. He leaves to cherish his memory, three sons Ryan Ziegenhagel (Darlene), Daniel (Lorna), and David (Elaine). He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jared Ziegenhagel, and daughters Rae-anne, Ally, and Olivia, (Karmen Earl Ziegenhagel); Adam (Janice) Ziegenhagel, and son Seth; Meagan Ziegenhagel (Timothy Miller) and daughter Zahrya; Sheldon Ziegenhagel; Duane (Christine) Ziegenhagel and daughters Jayda and Maddy; Kyle and Travis Ziegenhagel and numerous nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his wife Irene, his brother George Ziegenhagel and one sister Freda Swadling. John was born in Medicine Hat in 1933, and was raised on the family farm north of Elkwater in the Robertson district by his parents Jacob and Amelia. He lived there until 1950, when he moved into Medicine Hat to attend high school. During his years in high school he was known for his athletic abilities, especially as a ball player and was known to be a very good dancer. In 1954, he met his soon to be lifelong soul mate Irene Veasey whom he dated for awhile. It was during this courtship that John was introduced to the Christian lifestyle which Irene was involved in, and it was not long before his most important relationship in life developed with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1955, John and Irene were wed and remained married till Irene’s passing in November of 2011. John and Irene were joined by their three sons, Ryan in 1957, the twins Daniel and David in 1959 and their family was complete. During John’s courtship with Irene he worked at numerous jobs which included, selling sewing machines and working on the underpass between Railway streets. His true working passion turned out to be the furniture business. He started his life long career in furniture at a store named Capital Furniture in downtown Medicine Hat. He started in the warehouse but was quickly promoted to the sales floor because of his ability to speak German. He remained with Capital Furniture until they decided to close their doors in 1966. From there he partnered with two other gentlemen, Albert Parker and Alec Tennant, to start Parker’s Furniture. Over the course of time he bought out his two partners and by the late 70’s he was the sole owner of Parker’s. John was an extremely well respected member of the furniture community and the business community in Medicine Hat. Over the years John attended and served on the Board of First Assembly of God and was also one of the original 16 member’s instrumental in starting the “Christ the King” church now known as River Valley Community Church in the flats area of Medicine Hat. He served on the board at this church and was very much gratified to see this work grow as it has. John in his last years also really enjoyed time with his brother Art and his three sisters Alice, Edna and Ruth. They could be found together every Tuesday at one of the local restaurants sharing lunch as well anecdotes from the past. He really cherished this time and even when feeling poorly always made an effort to make these Tuesday lunches. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. only.
