.SMITH
Maureen Beryl Smith of Medicine Hat, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2015, at the age of 83 years, beloved wife of the late Malcom “Mac” Smith. She leaves to cherish her memory two children, Nigel Smith (Mary Ries) and Tania (Steve) Thorne; four grandchildren, Shanda Thorne, Lacey (Brad) Worth, Damen (Alyssa) Thorne, Dakota Thorne (fiancé Kylie Myers) and one brother Bernard Clutterbuck. She was predeceased by her parents, Grace and Edward Clutterbuck; her husband Mac on September 14, 1975 and one brother Brian Clutterbuck. Maureen was born November 11, 1931 in Cardiff, Wales. It was there she spent her younger years under the watchful eyes of her brothers Brian and Bern. After grade school, she moved to Kent, England, where she went to school to become a nurse. Nursing was her passion and, not only did she love it, but she was good at it too. One of her proudest moments was receiving the Matrons Honor, an outstanding accomplishment presented to the finest in the field. Nursing was what brought her to Canada on an exchange program and, after meeting her future husband Malcolm (Mac), she immigrated to this country. Maureen was the apple of her fathers eye and her parents, not wanting to be without her, soon followed her to Canada. Maureen and Mac were married June 17, 1960, and settled on the Smith family farm where they raised their two children here until Mac’s passing in 1975. Shortly after, Maureen moved to Swift Current for four years and then on to Medicine Hat, where she would spend her remaining years. Maureen enjoyed entertaining and her door was always open for company to drop in. She loved dancing, bingo, playing cards, and traveling, especially to Australia to visit her brother Bernand his family. She was an avid dog lover and, though she never had one of her own in the last few years, she did have “granddogs” that she spoiled and brought her much joy. But her greatest love of all was her family, especially her four grandchildren who meant the world to her. She treasured their visits and always made time to play games with them. She will be remembered for her little eccentricities that made her extra special, like her love of Kit Kat bars, her small coffees with five sugar, and her dislike of vegetables, mornings, and being told what to do. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Good Sam’s for their exceptional care and for the love they showed to Maureen, especially in her last days. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday evening from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the Gull Lake Cemetery on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. (C.S.T.). As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the S.P.C.A. – 55 Southwest Drive SW, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 8E8. To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to: pattfh@telusplanet.net subject heading: Maureen Smith, or you may visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com and leave a message of condolence.
