.1927 ~ SUTHERLAND ~ 2014
Robert “Bob” James Sutherland, beloved husband of Maude Sutherland of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, December 25th, 2014 at the age of 87 years. Bob also leaves to cherish his memory his children, Frances Sutherland and Bruce (Janet) Sutherland; four grandchildren, Andrew Sutherland, Christie (Andrè) Lefrancois, Kathy (Nick) Roche and Trish (Tim) Getzinger; and nine great-grandchildren. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Bruce and Charlotte Sutherland. Bob was born at New Westminster, British Columbia on July 8th, 1927. He served in the military for 36 years from 1947 until 1983. Bob was a member of Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians). He married Maude Henderson on July 7th, 1955 in Aberdeen, Scotland. After retirement, Bob and Maude made Medicine Hat their home. A Come and Go Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held at the SAAMIS CREEKSIDE CENTRE, 11 Dunmore Road SE, on Friday, January 2nd, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A Private Graveside Service will be held at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery. Pearl May Ruff of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully to her new home with her family by her side, after 6 years at South Country Village, on Monday, December 22nd, 2014 at the age of 82 years. Pearl leaves to cherish her memory her son, Garry Ruff (Donna); daughter, Gail Millen (Harvey); five grandchildren, Jennifer Lembke (Mike), Jerod Ruff (Kate), Sarah Dowler (Corey), Candace Millen and Katherine Millen-Worre (Phillip); five great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Roxanne Schimpf. Pearl was predeceased by her parents, George and Amalia Schimpf; two brothers, Vern and Archie. Pearl was born in Leader, Saskatchewan on April 2nd, 1932. She moved to Medicine Hat in 1947 with her parents, as a young girl to start a family business and lived here in Medicine Hat until her passing. Edward Gordon Steele of Swift Current, beloved husband of Renee, passed away on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014 at the age of 80. Edward leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Deb (Bernie) Steele-Kretschmer; and his sister, Joan Ray (Lou). Ed was born in Edmonton and attended grades 1 -9 in Vegreville, Alberta. In his teens, he joined the navy to see the world. Later, he started his career at Premier Steel in Edmonton where his dedication to making the world a better place led him to become involved with the labor movement and his work with the United Steelworkers of America. This passion took him from Edmonton to the Maritimes, British Columbia, and all points in between. Ed later crossed the table and began a career in Human Resources in Medicine Hat where he worked for Western Cooperative Fertilizer, Dom Glass and finally the City of Medicine Hat. 25 years ago he met and married, Renee, the love of his life. They spent the last 20 years enjoying retirement and dividing their time between Lac Pelletier, Saskatchewan and Weslaco Texas. Ed loved golfing, being with people, sharing his infectious laugh, sharing past memories and creating new ones. He was a loving father to Deb, a caring brother to Joan and a good friend to many. Ed passed in Swift Current, Saskatchewan one day after his 80th birthday. The family will be forever grateful to the caring staff at The Bentley and I Care in Swift Current for taking such good care of him in the last year of his life. Alice Virginia Bollinger of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Jack Bollinger, passed away on Wednesday, December 24th, 2014 at the age of 77. Alice leaves to cherish her memory her brothers, Lloyd “Butch” Braconnier and Cyril (Eileen) Braconnier; one sister, Lucille Edwards; sister in law, Hilda (Irish) Anton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Alice was predeceased by her parents, Ed and Eva; husband, Jack; three brothers, Wilfred, Francis and Cecil; as well as one sister, Mary Lou. Alice was an avid bowler, who enjoyed reading, loved to play cards, and go to bingo. She was a very talented seamstress who also enjoyed doing crafts which showed in all her floral arrangements when she was a florist who owned her own shop and later worked for others. Alice was a very independent woman who knew what she wanted and was not afraid to go after it. Alice had a soft spot and a love of cats, she had cats most her life, they were like her kids. It is with sad hearts that the family of George Friedt announce his death on December 25, 2014 at the age of 85 years, beloved husband of the late Julia Friedt. He is survived by his only sister Rosemary Lerner, five children, Randy (Brenda), Dan (Joanne), Kent (Cheryl), Marina (Barry) and Colette, as well as sixteen grandchildren, Sheldon, Kevin, Christopher, Cari, Alison, Breanne, Aleise, Jenna, Wyatt, Dylan, Melissa, Krysta, Kyle, Kelsie, Orry and Tye and nine great grandchildren. George was born on June 4, 1929 and raised in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan. He married Julia Matz in 1953, and together they farmed and raised their family until 1974 when they moved to Medicine Hat. He took on the work of maintenance at the Medicine Hat Coop until his retirement in 1992. George will be remembered by many as the ‘candy man’ who gave the greatest hugs at church. He was an honest steady man, calm and filled with a deep faith in God. He exercised that faith by attending daily mass. In the last years of his life, he was a regular with his ‘coffee buddies’. He was also known as “Mr. Fix It” It was said: “If George couldn’t fix it, then throw it out.” It was the motto at the Coop. He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 60 years and was a 3rd Degree Knight. He loved music, photography, stamp collecting, fishing and gopher shooting. He has taken thousands of pictures and many hours of video over the years, mostly of his children and grandchildren. Family and friends will gather for prayers in the PATTISON CHAPEL on December 30, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Mike Dechant, OMI celebrant. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. Those wishing to sing in the choir for the mass of resurrection are invited to be at the church at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday for a practice. Our family has been involved with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate for our entire lives. Theodore “Ted” Herman went to be with his Lord on December 24, 2014 at the age of 96 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Helanda Herman; four sons, Dennis (Kathi), Tom, Jim (Renee) and Nolan (Tammy); three daughters, Bonnie Hartung, Dixie (Don) Vair and Lois (Randy) Beck; fourteen grandchildren, Ross, Ryan (Ariana), Todd (Val) & Kerri (Bill) Stait, Bradley (Janice), Kim (Tyler) Rae, Leanne, Greg Hartung (Lori), Maureen, Jamie, Jill, Cody Vair (Lacey), Lindsey (James) O’Donnell, Matthew Beck; thirteen Great Grandchildren; one brother, Rubin Herrmann; five sisters, Barbara Sonnenburg, Martha Anderst, Freda (Wally) Kanwischer, Caroline Zeitner, Helen Griscowsky; Helanda’s brother Ed (Beth) Lemke; her four nieces, Sharleen Dewar, Heather Thiessen, Cathy Chase, Michelle Barkman one nephew Darrell Lemke. Ted was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Carrie Herrmann; his first wife Irene, son Bernie, daughters-in-law Kathy and Antonia Herman; one brother Edwin and his wife Vera; four brothers-in-law. Ted served four years in World War II, (1941-1945), as Signalman for the Irish Fusiliers, then transferred to Calgary Highlanders where he served as Sergeant until his honorable discharge.
In his younger years he was very active in his church teaching Sunday School, Bible Study and serving on the Executive. He was also very passionate about giving back to his Community which involved becoming a Charter Member of the Drowning Ford Grazing Association, was instrumental in bringing electricity in the Cypress rural area and served as Secretary Treasurer for the Cypress Rural Electric Association. Ted as a young man felt very strongly that the Pioneers, who settled the area should be taken care of and was one of the founding Directors of the Cypress View Foundation in Medicine Hat and was honored by the Provincial Government in 2012 for this. He felt strongly about education, as he was not given the opportunity to complete his due to the need to help on the family farm. Ted wanted to ensure that his children received an education and donated the land to the Number Four School Division to build the Hermansite School. He was also an early member of the Medicine Hat Coop and the Walsh Auction Mart. When Ted and Helanda started winter vacationing on Vancouver Island, Ted started to write his memoirs, and after two years had it printed, naming it “There is a Tomorrow”! Lea was known for her loving personality and her willingness to open her heart and home to everyone making them feel loved and welcome.
