.A week ago today, family and friends gathered at Cook’s to honour the life of a wonderful lady, Vernie Ferguson. Rev. Scheske led the service and offered his words of comfort to the family and those in attendance. Vernie was proud of her family and she would have beamed with pride to look down and see her great- granddaughter, Sydney, share her sweet thoughts about GG…in the warmth of sun, family privately said their goodbyes at Hillside Cemetery as they lovingly placed some of Vernie’s favourite things’ to take on her spiritual journey.
Looking down from the Heavens,
High up above the clouds…
She sees her legacy of family,
Of which she was so proud.
Her Life Lived…
Her Life Cherished…

WILMA JOHANNE SILCHER1923 – 2014
Wilhelmine (Wilma) Johanne Silcher (nee Lange) passed away peacefully after a long fulfilling 90 year journey through life at the St. Joseph Carmel Hospice on August 21, 2014 with her family by her side. Mom was born to Heinrich and Thekla Lange on December 6, 1923 in Osnabruck, Germany. She enjoyed attending school and helping her mother look after her siblings. After completing school she worked at a number of positions where she was able to provide additional food and clothing for her family during the war.
In February 1950 she met Helmut Silcher and married him on August 25, 1951. In May of 1956 Helmut suggested that their small family make their new home in Canada. Wilma, a total city girl, was quick to agree so they took their two young children and by way of the ship the “Seven Seas” landed in Quebec City and from there they traveled four days on a train to finally disembark in Medicine Hat which remained her home.
Wilma gave up her beautiful damask bed linens to fill them with straw to make mattresses for her family. She took to this strange life learning from her relatives and neighbours the art of making bread, growing a garden and transitioning into a proud Canadian. During these years three additional children joined the family.
Mom did not judge anyone. She knew that each person came with their own personality and way of doing things. She never offered advice unless she was asked. She embraced each person and welcomed them into her family. She was well known for her excellent cooking and baking skills. Everyone was always welcomed at her table especially on “Bun” day!
As her children grew and the grandchildren arrived she started working on various needle craft projects. We all have lovely woolen afghans, socks, hats and mittens. She was known for her baby layettes and always had a stockpile hidden in her closet.
Mom was lovingly called “Oma” not just by her grandchildren and great grandchildren but also by others who accepted her as a friend and used this as a word of endearment.
Wilma was a devoted wife. She supported her husband, Helmut in all of his ventures; be they work related, sports, travel or having everyone over for a meal. She spent many happy years at the Elkwater Cabin watching her children, grandchildren and their dogs grow.
Wilma was able to stay in her own home until May of 2013 when she moved to “The Wellington”. Her journey took her to the Carmel Hospice where she spent her final days. The family is very grateful for the exceptional care that she received from her tong-time friend and physician Dr. Jeraj, the staff of “The Wellington” and the kind and loving care to her and the family at the Carmel Hospice.
Wilma was predeceased on June 29, 1990 by her much loved husband, Helmut. She was predeceased by all her siblings and all of Helmut’s siblings.
Remaining to cherish her smiles, laughter and memories are:
Hannelore (Gerald) Kulpe and their son Kristopher
Willi (Connie) Silcher and their children; Jason (Carla Stern) and Jesse
Hinz (Janice) Silcher and their daughter Shannon (Jason Beattie)
Rita (David) Olsen and their children; Steven (Cara); Debbie (Michael
Niebergall) and Susan (Mike Bellrose)
Monika (Eddie Doehring) and their children Crystal, Aaron, Chelsea, Caitlin
and Nick
Great Grandchildren: Aubree, Jada, Myla, Emrynn, Edwin, Ezra, Claire,
Matthew, Oliver, Greyson, James, Caiden, Airik, Caleb, Gavin, Leah,
Odessa and Canyon.
She also leaves to mourn her passing numerous nieces and nephews both here in Canada and in Germany.
Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so on Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. only. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Tuesday August 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend.
