December 24, 1932 ~ June 13, 2014

It is with sadness that the family of Mrs. Dolores Isobel DeJong (nee Paul), announce her peaceful passing while at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Friday, June 13, 2014, at the age of 81 years. Dolores was born in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan, and moved with the family to Medicine Hat in 1945. On August 8, 1952, she married the love of her life, Cory DeJong at St. Patrick’s Church. In 1965, Dolores and Cory along with their children moved to Calgary before returning to Medicine Hat in 1987 where she resided until her passing. Dolores worked at Medalta Potteries and Dominion Glass for a number of years. She also did volunteer work and was always a supportive spectator at her children’s and grandchildren’s school and community activities. Dolores was a warm and welcoming person who had a unique sense of humour and will be fondly remembered by those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Dolores is survived by her husband, Cory; children, Cyndi, Corinne (Paul), Carmen (John) and Jason (Shelly); grandchildren, Braden, Anne, Paul, Michelle, Tyler, Jacqueline, Cory, Giles, Easton and Cale; great-grandchildren, Kodi, Kira, Jordan, Cohen and Saxon. Dolores is survived by her sisters, Leona and Shirley (Ray) and many nieces and nephews. Dolores was predeceased by her parents, John and Cordelia as well as her brothers, Bobby, Tom, Rudy and sisters, Lorraine, Irene and Thomias. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so one hour prior to Vigil Prayers and again one hour prior to the Funeral Mass. The Vigil Prayers will be recited at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901- 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Parish, 238 – 2 Avenue N.E., Medicine Hat on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. with The Very Reverend Father Long Vu celebrant. Interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery. Alvina Nathalia Schmitt (nee: Bauer), formerly of Burstall, Saskatchewan, passed away in the Riverview Care Centre in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at the age of 91 years, beloved wife of the late Harold Schmitt. She leaves to cherish her memory three sisters, Linda Stickelmier of Medicine Hat, Rose (Harvey) Mantie of Swift Current and Marlene Henessey of Reno, Nevada; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Bauer, Sharlene Kew, Tillie Wagner and Rose Schmitt; a brother-in-law, Mike Zubot, dear friends and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Harold on December 15, 2008, her parents Anna (Bitterman) and Gustav Bauer; her stepmother, Pauline (Stabler); sisters, Pauline Zubot and Frieda Zubot; brothers, Edward, Erwin, Bill and Lloyd Bauer; as well as many treasured people from the large extended Bauer and Schmitt families. Alvina was born March 9, 1923, and enjoyed family, friends, farm life, and a close knit community. She married Harold on June 25, 1948, and they were soul mates for over 60 years. They were long time members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Burstall and Victory Lutheran Church in Medicine Hat. They were blessed with good times and many wonderful family and friends near and far, young and not so young. When Harold became seriously ill and was hospitalized, Alvina, afflicted by Alzheimer’s became a resident in Cottage C at the Good Samaritan Home, then at Riverview Care Centre. The caring staff, the comfort, and dignity Alvina was given are much appreciated as are the residents and their visitors for their smiles, conversation, friendliness and compassion. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Monday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday morning from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. The funeral service will be held in Victory Lutheran Church (2793 Southview Drive SE) on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Lila deWaal officiating. Interment will follow in the Prairieview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Victory Lutheran Church, 2793 Southview Drive SE., Medicine Hat, AB.
