Mrs. Bertha (Bertie) Mills, beloved wife of the late Mr. James Mills and long time resident of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully at the Riverview Care Centre on Monday, April 21, 2014, at the age of 86 years. She is survived by her younger brother, Charles of Nova Scotia and grandsons, James and Marshall of British Columbia. She also has numerous nieces and nephews across Canada. Bertie was predeceased by her husband, Jim and most recently by her only daughter, Lee; her parents, three brothers, and three sisters. Bertie was born in Sydney, NS the second youngest of eight siblings. She had come out west to visit her sister in the late 1940’s and met and later married Jim Mills of Carstairs, AB. They moved to Medicine Hat where Jim began a career in the funeral business. They were actively involved in the community for many years. Bertie loved to sing and was a member of the Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church choir. After moving to the west coast for a few years, Jim and Bertie returned to the Hat’ into a new home on Shaw Crescent. They enjoyed some good years there until Jim had to move to personal care due to the onset of Alzheimer’s. Bertie remained at her home with increased help of great neighbours, especially Don and Virginia Mason. She too fell into the clutches of Alzheimer’s and had to move into personal care; first at the Teeoda and then to Riverview where she received great care from the staff.
We, Bertie’s extended family would like to thank the Riverview staff for their care. We would like to especially thank Marlene Ruff, Bertie’s long time friend and choir mate, for her guardianship and for being in her corner when no one else could or would. A Celebration of Bertie’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Thursday, May 1, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. A reception will immediately follow in the Cook Southland Reception Facility. HOFER, SANDRA ELAINEJune 30, 1979 – April 29, 2014
In loving memory of Sandra Hofer who passed away peacefully at home at the age of 34 years with her parents by her side. Sandra was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and lived her whole life on the Elkwater Colony which she was proud to call home. Sandra struggled most of her life with kidney failure and received two transplants, both from her siblings, Marlene (1998) and Larry (2005). Her parents were Sandra’s biggest support and were always there for her. Many times because of her long hospital stays, God became her closest friend and she spent much time in prayer. Times of good health were far and few so Sandra found joy in spoiling the children of Elkwater with treats. A big thank you to the Elkwater Colony for accepting Sandra for who she was and for all the support. Thank you to all the doctors and nurses who were involved in Sandra’s care.
Sandra leaves to cherish her memory her parents, Reverend Paul and Susie Hofer of Elkwater, Alberta; sisters, Debbie (Minister Sam), Marlene (Moses) of Grande Prairie, Alberta, Amanda (Justin) of Billings, Montana; brothers, Larry (Rachel), Paul (Anna) of Elkwater, Alberta. She had ten nieces, Leanna, Annette, Carolene, Almira, Karman, Sandra, Lori, Mariah, Debra, and Chelsea; eight nephews, Paul, Landon, Kirby, Jayden, Jared, Adam, and twins, Tristen and Travis; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Sandra was predeceased by her brother, David Paul; maternal grandparents, Reverend Paul and Katie Stahl of Gildford, Montana; and paternal grandparents, Paul and Susanna of Elkwater; and uncles, Micheal (Susanna) Stahl of Gildford, Montana, and Peter (Katie) Wipf of Cranford, Alberta.
The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, May 1st, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Elkwater Colony with burial to follow in the Colony Cemetery.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your heart and share with me
God wanted me now; He set me free.
Memorial gifts in Sandra’s memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, 6007 – 1A Street SW, Calgary, Alberta, T2H 0G5. Condolences may be sent through
