.1919 ~ NISHIMOTO ~ 2014
Just as the sun was rising on April 24, 2014, Matsumi Nishimoto, at the age of 94 years, passed away peacefully in the arms of her daughter and surrounded by the love of her family – a reciprocation of a lifetime of love that she generously showered on them.
Matsumi was predeceased by her husband, Ted Chikao Nishimoto, and her son, Satoru. She is lovingly remembered by her 3 daughters: Linda (John) Hashem, Wendy (Bob) MacPhail, and Amy (Scott) Nishimoto-Warren; her grandchildren: Jim Witts, Kenji (Amanda) Witts, Rayko (Rob) Blyth, Stephen MacPhail, Jamie MacPhail (Matt McDonald), Brendon Nishimoto- Warren, Emiko Nishimoto-Warren, Celina (Rob) Symmonds, Laurie Ling (Kyle Kuntz); and her great grandchildren: Jimmy, Kaitlyn, Kyler, Cameron, Miyoko, Tyra, Courtney, Brooklynn, Savannah, McKenna, Kodi, Dylan, Jesse, Reanne, and Austin.
She is also survived by 2 sisters (Kaoru, Kimiko) and 1 brother (Tsukasa) in Japan. She is also survived by numerous other relatives in Japan and Vancouver. She was predeceased by a brother (Sadanobu), a sister (Sadae), sisters-in-law (Kimiko, Hatsumi, Tokie), and a brother-in-law (Tatsuki) in Japan.
Matsumi was born on August 1, 1919 in Kamijinnai, Ozumachi, Kumamoto-ken, Japan. She attended a vocational school and specialized in cooking, sewing, clothing design, and flower arrangement (ikebana). She married Chikao in 1937. In 1941, they had a son, Satoru, and on her own, braved the devastation of his death at the age of 4 years. Chikao had been traveling back and forth from Japan to Canada in order to establish a life in Canada. Ultimately and unfortunately, the war then kept the couple apart for 14 years.
In 1954, Matsumi courageously left Japan and her family behind. After an arduous 14 day journey on a ship, she was finally able to be reunited with Chikao. Together they lived in Seven Persons, Ralston, and in Medicine Hat where she resided until her passing. She worked at Burk’s Draperies, BATUS, and along with her husband at his Sunrise Market Garden, making many good friends along the way. She had her “good friends”, “work friends”, “neighbor friends”, “bus friends”, “hospital friends”. She was passionate about cooking, gardening, and sewing, but her greatest times of enjoyment were when she had her family around her. Many remember the fabulous meals, especially the New Year’s dinners, she prepared for family and friends. She was an inspiration to her family especially when, for 11 years, she became a dedicated caregiver to her husband during his battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was always filled with love and pride for her family. Her gentle and generous spirit is the legacy she has left them. Matsumi was fortunate enough to visit her family in Japan several times. On one trip, she fulfilled her dream when all three daughters accompanied her in order to “build a bridge” between the families and the two countries. On her most recent trip to Japan in 2010 (although she always wanted to go back to Japan), she quietly informed her family there that it is likely her last visit. She will see them again. Ja matta, ne.

.MORRONE, Carmela
27 May 1937 – 25 April 2014
It is with deep sadness, but firm hope in the Resurrection, that the family of Carmela Morrone mournfully announces her passing at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB. Carmela leaves to cherish her memory three loving children and their spouses: Francesca (Randy) Anheliger; Serafina (Rick) Bouvette; and Andonio (Aileen) Morrone; as well as her six grandchildren who adored their Nonna: Curtis (Carrie) Anheliger & Darren Anheliger (Kacie Gould); Rev. Cristino Bouvette & Lisa Bouvette (Drew Pocsik); Matteo Morrone & Camerino Morrone. Curt & Carrie are proud to have given Nonna her first and only great- grandchild, Baby Elizabeth, whom our family joyfully expects to meet very soon. Carmela is survived by three sisters-in-law; Rosa Tiberio & Annunziata Morrone, both of Calgary; and Filomena Farnitano of Italy; as well as one brother-in-law; Domenico Parente, also of Calgary; and many nieces, nephews and their children, whom she loved as her own. Carmela was predeceased by her parents, Luigi Vignone & Serafina Romano, and three brothers, Giovanni Vignone, Cristino Vignone and one brother who died as a child, Giuseppe Vignone; as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law whom she cherished: Cristinella Morrone & Libero Chiarizia; Giovanni Morrone; Maria & Paolo Franco; Concetta Morrone & Mariangelo Ferrante; Giuseppe Tiberio; Angiolina Parente; and Giuseppina & Cristino Arcari. We pray she is also now reunited with the love of her life, her husband of 38 years, Pasquale Morrone.
Carmela was born in the small Italian village of Sepino in 1937 where she remained until following her fiancé to Canada in 1960. They wed on October 8th that same year and settled in Calgary before moving to, and making their home in, Medicine Hat. She held numerous jobs to help get her family off the ground before giving herself entirely over to caring for her family and assisting her husband in the operation of his successful tailor shop. Family was her life and hospitality was her gift. No mouth went unfed by the most delicious food in her house and once her grandchildren began to arrive, Nonna took on a new full-time job lovingly supplying for their every need. Our lives feel empty without you, Nonna, but we know that you continue to pray for us now as you always have.
In her widowed life, great thanks must be paid to her dear friends who attend the Daily Mass at Holy Family Parish with whom she forged beautiful relationships, and in a special way, the family thanks Dan & Blanche Hudec who generously drove her to their favored pastime of attending the weekday Holy Mass.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a viewing at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday evening between 6:00-8:00 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday between 12 noon – 12:55 p.m. Vigil prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 and Mass of Christian Burial to be offered on Wednesday, April 30th at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) with Father Cristino Bouvette as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Seminarian Fund c/o the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Calgary (120 17 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB, T2S 2T2) to support the formation of priests.
