1924 ~ LAROCQUE ~ 2014It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Joseph Nelson Larocque, fondly known as “Grumpa Joe” on March 11th, 2014. Joe was predeceased by his wife, Katharine and leaves to cherish his memory his “chosen” families – The Steele Family, Karen, Justin, Jordan, Regin, Korilyn and Jayda; The Christianson Family – Laverne, Ron, Darlene, Dale, Tina, Tyler, Ashley, Kieran, Jake, Paige, Tyson, Shelby, Troy, Cheyenne, Travis, Cory, Billi, Carson, Sydney; Kim, Brian and Mikaela Arseneault, Ada Materi, Bill, Cindy and Devon Woods, Wayne and Wanda Quallie, Dean, Kim, Brooke, Jaxson Quallie, Wanda and Claude Clarke, Natasha and Jason Hickey, Tracy Clarke, and his dogs Bella and Tika who he spoke very highly of. Those dogs were very special to Grumpa Joe. He also leaves family from Ontario; Katharine’s Family in Medicine Hat, and numerous friends. Joe was born on April 16th, 1924 in Ontario. He was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Elks, and the Knights of Columbus. Joe was an avid bingo player at Top Hat Bingo, a lover of card games although he sometimes was a “crib cheater”, and attended and volunteered at his church, Holy Family Parish. He developed a newfound love for “newfie” parties. BEIERBACH (NEE SAILER), DOROTHY FLORA With much sadness we announce the passing of Dorothy, beloved wife of the late John Beierbach of Medicine Hat, on March 14, 2014, at age of 84 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Deanna Clement, and son-in-law John Clement, of Montreal; grandchildren Vikki Booth of Ottawa, Kristi Bangs (William Fraser) of Oxford Mills, Ontario, Dean Beierbach (Amber Herman) of Medicine Hat, Dallas (Kaat) Beierbach of Bow Island, Andy Clement (Amelia Leighton) of Montreal, and Matt (Jinhe) Clement of Seoul, South Korea; and great grandchildren Reece Kmiecik of Lethbridge, Josh Kmiecik of Ottawa, Jack Fraser of Oxford Mills, Declan Clement of Montreal and River Beierbach of Bow Island; one brother, Elmer (Doreen) Sailer of Lethbridge; three sisters-in-law, Adeline Beierbach of Calgary, Frieda Mitchell and Dorothy (Gilbert) Lonson of Medicine Hat; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Dorothy was also predeceased by her husband John on October 31, 2005, her son Douglas Beierbach on December 25, 2012; by her parents Fred and Emma Sailer, parents-in-law John and Leontina (Lena) Beierbach, sister and brother-in-law Lila and John Teierle, sister and brother-in-law Evelyn and Len Groves, brothers-in-law Ed Beierbach, Doug Mitchell and Major Everett as well as sister-in-law Ella Everett. Dorothy was born in Medicine Hat on June 29, 1929, where she did her schooling and early working years. She worked at Medicine Hat Greenhouses and later at Medalta Pottery. In November 1948, she married John Beierbach and moved to the family farm in the Hilda area, where the city girl learned to be a farmer’s wife… milking cows, raising and killing chickens, pigs and cows for meals, operating all manner of farm machinery and many more demanding duties. She learned well and quickly and together they worked the farm until 1966, when they ‘retired’ to Medicine Hat. Shortly thereafter Dorothy began working downtown as a clerk at City Bakery, where she stayed until 1976. At that time Dorothy and John bought a small business, Madamoiselle Shoes, and together they ran that until 1981, before truly retiring. Dorothy enjoyed camping and fishing and her time at the Elkwater cottage with John until his passing. She also enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren, traveling, socializing with her coffee and scrabble friends, shopping and baking, making sure all the family had desserts whenever they wanted them. She will be dearly missed by all. DRSCHIWISKINellie Marie Drschiwiski passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the age of 88 years, beloved wife of the late Pete Drschiwiski. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Diane (Wayne) Gilbertson of Bow Island; six grandchildren, Alan, Chad (Helen), Dan (Jackie) {their children, Justin (Jag) and Charles (Chip)}, Vickie (Craig) Pulsifer (their children, Kavan, Colton and Ryann), Crystal (Damien Ferbey), Sarah (Kurtis Johnson) (their children Kiya and Rylie); two sisters, Mary (Mel) Loose, Adeline Rivers, one sister-in-law, Joyce Chester and one brother-in-law Charlie Snell as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Pete on November 13, 1995; her parents, Mary and John Chester; two brothers, John and Frank; two sisters, Edith and Ethel. Nellie was born and raised on the family farm at Estuary, Saskatchewan on May 5, 1925. She spent a couple of years living with her Uncle and Aunt in Detroit, Michigan. Upon her return she married Pete on June 20, 1953 in Leader, Saskatchewan. Together they farmed at Estuary and Acadia Valley, retiring to Medicine Hat. Nellie has lived in Bow Island for the past 12 years, the last 7 in Extended Care. The greatest joys in her life were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her sweet smile will be greatly missed. GEISEL, Magdalena (Stillinger)The family of Magdalena Geisel is deeply saddened to announce her passing on March 18, 2014 at the age of 87 years. Magdalena is survived by her children, Amy (Jim) Christmann, Gerda (Will) Skrbinsek; her grandchildren, Michael Christmann, Cindy (Steve) Jetter, Dylan Skrbinsek, and Jaymie Skrbinsek; her great granddaughter, Leah Jetter; her brother, Peter (Veronica) Stillinger as well as many nieces and nephews. Magdalena was born in Kukujevci, Yugoslavia on February 15, 1927 and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1960. Her biggest passion was tending to her beautiful garden and flowers which she was so very proud of. She was a fantastic cook and phenomenal baker and enjoyed feeding a crowd, ensuring that no one was ever left hungry. She also spent many hours doing word searches and playing cards and games with her grandchildren. SHARON WASHBURN1946 ~ 2014
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Sharon Theresa Washburn, beloved wife of Norman Washburn, announce her passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at the age of 67 years. Sharon was born September 6, 1946 in Turner Valley, a daughter to proud parents, Cecil and Stella Bevans. She attended school in Gravelbourg and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Edmonton. In the early 60s she met Norman Washburn and they were later married October 24, 1964 in Edmonton. They made their home in Edmonton before moving to Medicine Hat in 1980. She was known for her many years of service to the Lawnshop and lastly, Diamond Cut Lawn Service. Sharon enjoyed the simple things in life…. reading, camping, going for walks and cooking for her family. She always put family first and supported her grandchildren as their number one fan whether it be soccer, ringette, hockey or recitals, grandma was always there cheering them on! One of Sharon’s fondest memories was watching her granddaughter, Jessica, dress up the family dog Molly in her numerous outfits. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed be her husband, Norman; children daughter, Terri Siwy and her children, Amanda, Hailey and Jessica; daughter, Brenda Daley and her son, Holden; son, Darryl (Carmen) Washburn and their family, Isabelle and Kyran as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Cecil and Stella Bevans and two brothers, Gerald Horne and Russel Bevans.
