Mr. George Dietrich of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Mrs. Iva Dietrich, passed away on January 27th, 2014. The Funeral Mass was held yesterday at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church. Ronald Earl Scharf, soul mate of Donna for 58 years next Tuesday and loving father to daughter, Jody (Gord) Merkel and Tim (deceased), passed away on Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 at the age of 82 years. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Kim (Dwight) Layton, Kelley (Evan) Gavelin and Kody (Robyn) Merkel. Papa to Rylee, Auston and Deikon Layton; Dharma Gavelin and step-grandchildren, Kayden and Nolan Gavelin. Ron is also survived by his sister, Beverly (Jim) Wiseman; sister-in-law, Mary Scharf; Donna’s family, Bobbi Wiebe, Mary Dunston and Linda Hepfner; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Roy and Rene Scharf. He is also predeceased by his brothers, Bruce and Barry. Ron was in the RCAF for 5 years, and then worked at CPR. He went to university for an education degree as an adult student at the age of 42 years. He taught at Fort Smith, NWT, Hanna, AB and Crescent Heights High School. His love of sports and kids led to him coaching football, first in Moose Jaw and then he started a junior football team at Crescent Heights High School, and then on to the senior team. He was also a volunteer fitness instructor at the YMCA for over 10 years. Ron is a member of Westminster United Church and a Life Member at Connaught Golf Course. Donna and Ron travelled extensively, always with golf clubs in tow. The Funeral Service will be held in WESTMINSTER UNITED CHURCH, 101 – 6th Street SE, on Friday, January 31st, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Jan Stevenson officiating. A private interment will follow at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery. Gerhard “Gerry” Engel passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 at the age of 76 years, beloved spouse of Dorinda and loving father to son, Robert (Sheila) Engel, daughter, Cathy Engel, and step-son, Trevor Trainor. He also leaves behind a special niece, Alex Vachon and his godchild, Liz Unrau. Gerhard is survived by his siblings, Waldemar of Stade, Germany, Erwin of Prince George, BC, and Gerda (Ernie) Meston of Swift Current, SK; Dorinda’s parents, Louis and Mary Trainor of Summerside, PEI; brothers-in-law, George (Marg) and St. Clair of Medicine Hat; sister-in-law, Sheila of Summerside; and niece, Jillian of Charlottetown, PEI; the mother of Robert and Cathy, Carol McIvor; numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and Germany; and his dog and special friend, Molly. Gerhard was predeceased by his parents, Wilhelm and Elsa Engel; his son, David; his son-in-law, Eric Kochie; his sister, Hildegard; and his sister-in-law, Eunice Trainor. Born on August 26th, 1937 in Bessarabia, Romania, Gerhard moved to Canada with his parents and siblings in 1954, eventually settling in Redcliff. After working at Buick & Coal, Dominion Glass, and Press Brick, he began his long-term employment with the Goodyear plant in 1966, retiring in 1997. Family came first with Gerhard. His other loves were fishing, playing soccer, purchasing vehicles and restoring them. The family would like to thank all the staff at The Masterpiece for their exceptional care of Gerhard, especially Shelley, Sherry, Jesse, Denise and Kristin. At Gerhard’s request, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Gerhard’s Life will be held at a later date. Dean Roy Croswell of Medicine Hat passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at the age of 54 years.He leaves to cherish his memory two brothers, Douglas Croswell and Daniel Croswell (his daughter, Sarah); one sister, Deborah Wheeler (fiancé James Hall) (her children, Jason (his son Andrew), Stacey, Kelly (her daughter, Jadacey). Hildegard Sievert, beloved wife of Manfred Sievert and loving mother to Peter Sievert and Gabriele (Jerry) Schuh, passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital with family and friends by her side, on Monday, January 27, 2014, at the age of 84 years. Hildegard loved fine arts, flowers in her garden and was a fine crafts person. Many good friends will miss her presence. In accordance with Hildegard’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private time of remembrance was held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating.
