.WETSCH, Sister Jane Frances
September 29, 1917 – Schuler, Alberta
December 26, 2013 – Calgary, Alberta

Sister Jane Frances Wetsch, SCSL, died peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre in Calgary on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at the age of 96 years and 66 years as a Sister of Charity of St. Louis.
Sister Jane (Francisca) was born in Schuler, AB, the youngest in a family of five children. She completed grades 1-10 in Schuler and then remained at home to help with the family.
She entered the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis in Levis, Quebec in 1944 where she completed her novitiate studies, making her profession of vows in 1947. Sister Jane then returned to western Canada and completed her teaching training at the Moose Jaw Normal School.
Thus began her teaching ministry first in Shaunavon, followed by Swift Current, Radville, and Melville, Saskatchewan, Medicine Hat, AB, Burnaby, BC and Calgary. During these years she also completed her BA and B.Ed degrees. Her duties as educator and Principal encompassed a span of some thirty-two years.
Retirement was not in Sister Jane’s vocabulary. She began her second career and attended Mount Royal College in Calgary, obtained a Social Services certificate and worked with AADAC and Roper Hull correctional services for youth. Sister Jane’s great empathy for people in distress led her to her third ministry as a much loved Pastoral Care Co-ordinator for the Catholic Chaplaincy at the Rocky View Hospital – a role she held for over twenty years. She was also very active in the Grief Recovery programs at the Hospital. At various times over the years, Sister Jane also served in leadership roles within the Congregation as local superior and provincial councillor. In her leisure, Jane tended lovingly to her flowers and garden.
In 2003, Sister Jane moved to St. John’s Senior Care Home and truly retired. Her increasing fragile health required more care, thus in 2010 she become a resident at the Bethany Care Centre.
Sister Jane will be remembered for her deep faith, her compassionate, caring and loving nature with the children she taught. She followed her heart “to know Christ and serve him in the sick and elderly” and all those she encountered. These qualities endeared her to all who knew her.
Sister Jane will be lovingly remembered by the members of her religious community, her numerous nephews, nieces and cousins, her many students and their families, her Pastoral Care colleagues and by the many friends who had become so important in her life.
She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Philomina and her step-mother Marie (Marquart) Wetsch; her sisters, Helen and Emily Wetsch, Katherine (Joe) Duchscherer; and her brother Kasper (Rosemarie) Wetsch.
Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. John’s Convent (409 10A Street N.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (640 – 19th Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow in St. Joseph’s Section at Queen’s Park Cemetery in Calgary, AB. Condolences may be forwarded through http://www.mcinnisandholloway.com
