Val was born on October 28, 1928 on the family homestead five miles north of Schuler. He was the fifth of nine children. As an eager young man Val journeyed into Medicine Hat in search of work. After a brief spell as a section man with the C.P.R., he started working at Medalta Potteries in 1949. It wasn’t long before he caught the eye of a beautiful young co-worker named Rose. This was the start of a 63 year relationship. They were married on July 7, 1950 in Medicine Hat. That year he began working for Esso as a truck driver and continued to work there for 39 years. They were blessed with two sons, Gary and Glen. Val spent a lot of his time fishing and spending time with family and friends. Val had many passions throughout his long and happy life. He was an avid gardener, and loved everything about his garden; planting almost every vegetable there was to enjoy throughout the year. Val retired when his grandchildren were young so he could spend all his time teaching them his valuable gardening and fishing skills.
