1920 ~ KOPP ~ 2013Anton “Tony” Kopp of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of the late Catherine Kopp, passed away on Saturday, November 23rd, 2013 at the age of 93 years. Tony leaves to cherish his memory three children, Martin Kopp of Bradenton, Florida, Doreen (Albert) Steinback of Regina, and Gloria (Wayne) Gorin of Winnipeg; nine grandchildren: Penny (Matthew) Stone and their children, Sam and Sophie; Jennifer (Ian) Gludberg and their children, Owen and Mykaela; Wendy (Peter) McDougall and their children, Hugh and Nolan; Kevin (Carla) Steinback and their son, Tyler; Cory (Carrie) Steinback and their children, Hailey and Bronlyn; Tim (Rosana) Steinback and their son, Nicholas; Jolene (Chris) Hogan and their children, Caitlyn and Cole; Renee Gorin (Jason “Jay” Driedger); Michelle (Mike) Riechert and their daughter, Amara; special niece/daughter, Bernice (Chester) Welte and their three sons, Warren, Wayne, and Wade (Tammy) and their children, Wryder and Taylor; one sister, Bertha Littlechild of Edmonton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Tony was predeceased by his wife, Catherine on January 9th, 2011; his parents, George and Beta Kopp; one sons, Donald Kopp; one grandson, Craig Gorin; and his brothers and sisters. Tony was born on the family farm near Fox Valley, Saskatchewan on June 1st, 1920 where he was also raised and educated. He served in the Armed Forces during WWII (1942-1946) stationed in Canada, Britain and Europe. Upon his return home, Tony married the former Catherine Harty on November 10th, 1947 in Richmound, Saskatchewan. They continued to farm in the area from 1947 to 1976 and he was also Post Master from 1972 to 1985 in Richmound. In 1989, he and Catherine retired to Medicine Hat. Tony enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards, dancing, bowling, bicycling and visiting with his children and grandchildren. He is an Honourary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus and a Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Robertson Branch #17. Vigil Rites (prayers) will be said at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Wednesday, November 27th, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated in ST. PATRICK’S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 238 – 2nd Avenue NE, on Thursday, November 28th, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Long Vu, celebrant. The officers and members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Medicine Hat Branch #17 will conduct a Poppy Service for their departed comrade. Interment will follow in the Roman Catholic Section at Hillside Cemetery. 1930 ~ PAVAN ~ 2013Mr. Sara (Saravanapavan) Pavan, beloved husband of Mrs. Param Pavan of Medicine Hat, passed away on Friday, November 22nd, 2013 at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital at the age of 82 years. Sara is also survived by his two brothers, Chanmukapavan of Sri Lanka and Thiripurapavan of Toronto; his sister-in-law, Jega (Sri) Ranjan of Edmonton; his close niece, Rajini (Hanif) Mohamed of Calgary; his close nephew, Raju (Jas) Ranjan of Edmonton; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews in Canada and Sri Lanka. Sara was predeceased by his parents, Thambyiah and Ratnambal; and his sister. Sara served in the Government of Sri Lanka and also served at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Rio de Janeiro and the Philippines. He came to Medicine Hat in 1974 and married Param on December 14th, 1974. In 1987, they moved to California where Sara worked in Hollywood acting in two movies and 28 TV commercials and was a member of the Screen Actor’s Guild. In 2005, Sara returned to Medicine Hat where he was a writer for several newspapers and a frequent writer of letters to the Editor in the Medicine Hat News. Sara was also a strong advocate for seniors’ health issues. EDWARD WILLIAM (TED) WOOLFREY
November 4, 1941 – November 24, 2013Ted (Edward) Woolfrey passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, November 24th, 2013 at the age of 72. The eldest son of Bill and Berta Woolfrey, Ted was born and raised on the family dairy farm. He attended Medicine Hat High School where he excelled at football and met his high school sweetheart, Marion Miller. Ted and Marion married in 1961, enjoying many adventures in their 52 years together. They began their married life in Medicine Hat, working on the Woolfrey Dairy Farm. In 1967 they packed their family up and moved to Yellowknife, NWT where Ted worked as a Corrections Officer. They returned in 1972 to take over the farming operation. After the farm was sold, Ted worked for Belmac Supply until he established Torcal Resources which he and Marion have operated for over 30 years. Ted and his partners also developed Cottonwood Estates residential area and Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course and he was proud to see it through its 22nd year of operation. He was an active member of Kinsmen and the Masonic Lodge and supported many community causes such as Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited. An active sportsman, Ted played and refereed hockey, golfed, and loved hunting and fishing with his friends.He and Marion spent many happy summers at their cottage near Flin Flon and most recently enjoyed camping in their motor home. A true animal lover, he rescued and adopted many stray dogs and cats – he will be sorely missed by his furry friends. Ted and Marion loved to travel and have visited many exotic locations but particularly enjoyed spending time in Mexico. Friends and family were important to Ted and he and Marion hosted many parties and regularly attended social gatherings. He was particularly proud of his grandchildren and supported them in their many endeavors. Ted had a keen sense of justice and was not afraid to fight for what he believed in and was always willing to lend a hand to help others in need. Ted was predeceased by his father, Bill and brother, Dick. He is survived by his wife, Marion; his mother, Berta; his children, Cathy (Craig Wood) and Carole (Joe Harris); and grandchildren, Morgan and Will Wood, BJ (Megan) Wisnowski and their daughters, Olivia and Charlize; and many cousins and friends. The Funeral Service will be held at the CYPRESS CENTRE, 2055 – 21st Avenue SE, on Thursday, November 28th, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. with Gary W. Goran officiating. Interment will take place in the Family Plot at Hillside Cemetery. It is with heavy hearts that the family of Evelyn Maude Metz, beloved wife of the late Jacob (Jack) G. Metz, announce her passing while at the Valleyview Nursing Home on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at the age of 83 years. Evelyn was born in Medicine Hat on January 23, 1930 and attended Connaught and Montreal Street Schools. She married Jack on October 23, 1947, and shared many wonderful years together until his passing on November 23, 2006. Evelyn was generous and kind to all she knew. Her caring and loving nature has been easily passed onto the family. Evelyn’s sense of humor was evident right up to the last hours of her life. She enjoyed playing cards, especially canasta, baking cinnamon buns, shopping with Gail, aerobics, and walking her dog, King. In her early years she played the banjo along side Jack as he played his guitar. Evelyn will be forever remembered in the hearts of her daughter, Gail (Gordon) Gee; granddaughter, Kimberly; grandson, Lee; great-granddaughter, Jessa and great-grandson, Kajun; brother-in-law, Dave (Ann) Metz, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents; husband, Jack Metz and son, Kenneth Metz. SATZKEOlga Satzke (nee Koenig) passed away on Friday, November 22, 2013, at the age of 84 years, beloved wife of Walter Satzke of Redcliff. She also leaves to cherish her memory two children, Ingrid Augustine and Rosemary (Sheldon) Ellik; five grandchildren, Tammy (Darryl) Ross, Brent (Jacob) Lester-Satzke, Jason (Kara) Ellik, Jenny (Jesse) Zacharias and Troy Ellik; three great grandchildren, Brandyn, Dustyn and Kaitlyn Ross; one daughter-in-law, Marlene (Kim) Bohnet; two brothers, Edwin Koenig and Erich (Hilda) Koenig, one brother-in-law, Erich Martin and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Ludwig and Ieda Koenig; one son, Harry Satzke on February 28, 1988; one son-in-law; Zigfried Augustine; one brother, Fritz Koenig; her two sisters, Amanda Ditsche, Lydia Martin and one sister-in-law Hilda Koenig. Olga was born on March 17, 1929 in Ostrowite West Prussia, Poland. Here she received her education and in 1949, moved to Havelsee, West Germany where she met her husband, Walter. In 1952, they were married and that same year they immigrated to Canada. Olga and Walter settled in Redcliff and raised their three children.
