Anti-coal group submits petition to province

By Lethbridge Herald on March 13, 2025.

The Water For Food Group has announced that they have concluded the Official Petition signature collection process and submitted the petition to the legislature for review.
In a release they state that when the non-binding plebiscite took place in the Crowsnest Pass, 1,957 people voted for the Grassy Mountain coal project, but they received 6,787 signatures against it.
“The Water For Food group’s Official Legislature Petition was an opportunity to give a voice to those who were excluded,” spokesman Chris Spearman said in a statement.
The release states that in the next few weeks, they expect their Official Petition will be presented in the Alberta Legislature.
“Now democracy has truly been served, but will Energy Minister Brian Jean listen?”
The release also mentions that Energy Minister Brian Jean said democracy had spoken, even though the plebiscite was non-binding, excluded property taxpayers who had purchased vacation properties, asked residents their opinion about a proposed coal mine located in another municipal jurisdiction, and excluded downstream residents in the Oldman River basin who would be most affected by the negative aspects of the mine.
“It will be an opportunity to see firsthand if our Alberta Government will do the right thing and listen to Albertans opposed to the Grassy Mountain coal project.”
