Threatening to break into another man’s home and assault him has landed a 31-year-old man in jail.
Salar Dalair Khan made the threats against his girlfriend’s father-figure after the man let the girl borrow his vehicle on Jan 25. The girl failed to return the vehicle until the next day, however, and when she returned, Khan was with her and threatened to harm the man.
“Mr. Khan said he would assault him if he called the police; he would destroy the property in the apartment, and that he would break into the apartment and be standing over his bed every night if he called the police,” Crown Prosecutor Drew Gillespie said Thursday in Lethbridge court of justice, where Khan pleaded guilty to one count of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.
Khan also pleaded guilty to charges of resisting a peace officer and mischief stemming from an incident last month.
At about 6 a.m. on Feb. 3 a resident called police and said a man, later identified as Khan, had broken into his attached garage, although nothing was taken. Other residents told police their properties had also suffered damage during break-ins, and while police were talking to them, another individual approached police and said Khan was in his backyard.
Police advised Khan he was under arrest, but he took off running, eventually attempting to hide in a dark area on the opposite side of a fence. Police attempted to shoot him with a taser, but when that was unsuccessful, an officer “took him to the ground,” where Khan continued to struggle until he was handcuffed.
“Through further investigation nothing was ultimately taken from any of these garages or properties, but he had caused damage to several garages by going into them,” Gillespie told court.
Khan, who was intoxicated at the time of the break-ins, was sentenced to a total of three months in jail, minus the equivalent of 41 days spent in pre-disposition custody, and placed on probation for a year.
Defence told court Khan became addicted to methamphetamine some years ago following a divorce, but he plans to seek treatment for his addiction.
“I take responsibility for my actions,” Khan told the judge.
