Chinook High School among buildings closed Monday due to ruptured pipes

By Lethbridge Herald on January 16, 2024.

Whether due to weather or other circumstances, several city buildings were closed on Monday before subzero temperatures started rising from -40C before dawn to a relatively balmy -20 by mid-afternoon.
Chinook High School was closed due to what the Lethbridge School Division termed “a significant water leak.” This prompted cancellation of all classes, extra-curricular activities, meetings and events.
The Lethbridge School Division website said a fire sprinkler line burst in the school with water damage impacting the main and second floors.
“A number of classrooms and other areas inside the west end of the school experienced significant water damage,” said the division.
“Remediation crews have been brought in, who along with Chinook’s caretaking staff, have been tasked with removing water and drying classrooms. Later today the school will send out communication directly to students and parents/caregivers regarding school operations for the remainder of the week,” said LSD.
City Hall was close to staff and the public Monday due to a sanitary line leak that prompted the water service to be shut off.
City Hall will be reopening today.
A ruptured water pipe inside the Servus Sport Centre prompted it to be closed Monday with all Monday bookings and activities cancelled.
The Lethbridge Soccer Association will be reopening the building today with all operations set to resume as scheduled.
Holy Spirit School Division on Monday afternoon announced that all bus routes including rural and those on the Blood Reserve will be back operating today and all schools except for St. Catherine School in Picture Butte will be open. That school will remain closed because of a water main break.
Father Leonard Van Tighem School will reopen today after a flooding situation late last week was cleaned up.
All buses will be also be running in the Lethbridge School Division and all schools will be open with the exception of Chinook High.
