Fans of Starbucks coffee will have to seek their favourite beverage elsewhere after the downtown location inside Chapters at Park Place Mall closed last week.
The public affairs department of Starbucks Coffee Canada told The Herald on Tuesday that after careful consideration the decision was made to close the store with its last day of operation being on Nov. 17.
“As a standard course of business, we evaluate the store portfolio to determine where we can best meet our community and customers’ needs. This includes opening new locations, identifying stores in need of investment or renovation, exploring locations where an alternative format is needed and, in some instances, re-evaluating our footprint,” Starbucks said in response to an inquiry from The Herald.
“We are proud to be a part of this community and look forward to serving our customers at our nearby locations,” the statement added.
All employees at the store were offered the opportunity to transfer to a nearby location.
“This decision, like any decision we make, are made without regard to union status and are intended to advance the Starbucks Experience,” the company said in response to a question.
With its departure from the downtown location, fans of Starbucks still have numerous locations to purchase their favourite brews. Those locations closest to downtown include Save On Foods North Lethbridge and 414 Mayor Magrath Drive North. There are also two locations in south Lethbridge and three on the westside.
