The votes are counted and the voters in Lethbridge West have spoken. Shannon Phillips has been re-elected as the New Democratic Party MLA for Lethbridge-West.
Phillips addressed the media after Rachel Notley addressed the province, and said she has immense gratitude towards everyone who made this win possible.
“It’s just profound gratitude that I’ve had the honour of representing the city now for my third term, which I owe entirely to the voters of Lethbridge West, volunteers who work so hard on my campaigns over the years,” said Phillips.
She said the people of Lethbridge West have made a very clear choice about what  they are looking for, a strong voice to stand up for public health care, for public education, for better jobs going forward in a province that respects the rule of law.
“We have done nothing but grow over the years and a really that’s a testament to the people who live here, who are not afraid to stand up for their healthcare, who are not afraid to make the case for good quality public education, and who are absolutely committed to democracy and the rule of law,” said Phillips.
She said that is something she heard from the doorsteps over and over again and she believes  she will continue to hear the same moving forward.
Phillips said that even though she served as the Finance critic her last term, she will be happy with any role her leader Rachel Notley provides her with this time around.
She said she is extremely grateful to the people of Lethbridge West and mentioned that elections are always humbling because the amount of people that they involve.
“Hundreds of people who gave thousands of hours of their time in pursuit of our shared values, that is always the biggest thing after an election, when you look at the years that people have put in to make sure that we have a progressive presence in southern Alberta, something no one ever said could be done a decade ago, we have proven them wrong time and again. And it’s not me, it’s the thousands of people behind me, behind that one name on the election sign that deliver that every time,” said Phillips.
