A 21-year-old man who attacked an acquaintance with a hammer last year has received a two-month jail sentence.
Dre Kade Sweet Grass was sentenced Friday in Lethbridge provincial court, where he pleaded guilty to one count of assault with a weapon.
Court was told Sweet Grass and another man, Winston Hegi, were arguing over drugs while standing in the parking lot of the Lethbridge Public Library downtown.
“The argument turned violent, at which point Mr. Sweet Grass sprayed Mr. Hegi with pepper spray and attacked him with a hammer in the midsection of his chest, causing minor injury,” said Crown Prosecutor Sheena Campbell.
Campbell said there were witnesses to the attack, and it was caught on nearby video surveillance.
Sweet Grass also pleaded guilty to a charge of fraud under $5,000 and was sentenced to an additional 30 days in jail.
On Oct. 23, 2019 a resident called police to report someone had fraudulently cashed some of his cheques. He told police his vehicle had been broken into previously and he likely left his chequebook inside after doing some banking.
Police investigated and determined the cheques had been cashed and put in Sweet Grass’s account.
Campbell said Sweet Grass had also convinced a woman to sign some of the cheques and promised her drugs in return. She told police she put her name on some of the cheques but never received any drugs.
The total value of the cheques cashed was just over $2,000.
