With the probability of an influx of newcomers to Canada arriving in our city due to conflict around the world, Lethbridge Family Services’ Immigrant Services is ready to assist.
Director of LFS immigrant services, John Lafferty, said they recently received three Afghan families who arrived in February and are being helped to settle into their new life in Lethbridge.
He said that even though they offer a specific program for people who arrive to Canada under refugee status who are assisted by the government, they have plenty of other services for people with other types of immigration status.
“We have services that range from referrals to other services like health care, child care, to information about Canadian laws, to finding accommodations,” said Lafferty.
He said they are able to offer their services to any newcomer, up to the time they become Canadian citizens and they are always ready to help.
“We don’t need to do anything special, because we are ready to receive any newcomer to Canada. There is nothing special done for displaced Ukrainians. They will be able to receive the same type of help as any other newcomer to Canada,” said Lafferty.
