City council on Tuesday declared April 7 Green Shirt Day in Lethbridge.
City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to provide an exemption to a 1999 resolution that disqualified the mayor from issuing proclamations.
The exemption is so the City can proclaim April 7 as Green Shirt Day in honour of the late Logan Boulet whose donated organs saved the lives of six people after he was killed in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018.
The Jan. 11, 1999 resolution was passed to avoid controversy being caused in the community by proclamations made from the mayor’s office.
The donation of Boulet’s organs is estimated to have inspired about 150,000 Canadians to become organ donors. Logan himself registered as a donor after being inspired by coach and mentor Ric Suggitt who saved six lives as an organ donor in 2017.
The impact of the donation of Logan’s organs by his parents Toby and Geraldine out of respect for their son’s wishes has become known as the “Logan Boulet Effect.”
Council requested the exemption to the City’s resolution to support what it calls an “extraordinary cause.”
Mayor Blaine Hyggen wants to keep bringing the matter to council every year as a way of highlighting the impact Boulet has made.
