Jimmy Lynn Bad Man is fortunate the car in which he had passed out, didn’t also take him to the cemetery.
On Sept. 4 of last year Bad Man was found asleep in a hearse, which had been stolen from Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels. The business had notified police of the missing $100,000 hearse, and police subsequently received additional calls about a man who was passed out behind the steering wheel of a black hearse.
Police located Bad Man while he was still in the driver’s seat, and emergency services were called when Bad Man appeared to be in some kind of medical distress. Police also found in his possession a computer from an unrelated business.
Bad Man pleaded guilty Wednesday in Lethbridge provincial court to charges of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000, and he was sentenced to six months in jail.
Bad Man also pleaded guilty to charges of shopbreaking and housebreaking to commit theft.
At about 4:20 a.m. on Dec. 2, 2021 police were notified of a break-in to Hudson’s Canadian Tap House on 2 Avenue South. Officers noticed the glass patio doors had been smashed. Officers also noticed Bad Man, who they learned had several outstanding warrants, walking in an alley behind the business, and his clothing matched that of the person caught on video surveillance inside the restaurant. He was also seen carrying iPads out of the business, which were later recovered, along with four bottles of beer.
Two months earlier police received a report from a resident who said someone had stolen a garage door opener from her vehicle. She was awakened by the sound of her garage door opening, and when she checked she noticed a man riding away on a bicycle. Police caught up to him in the 2900 block of 32 Street South, and he was arrested. He was at the time in possession of a duffel bag containing stolen property, including bacon, a butane torch, flashlights, Halloween candy and other items, in total worth about $600.
Bad Man was sentenced to three months in jail for the break-in to the restaurant and pub, and six months for the break-in to, and theft from, the residential garage. Both sentences will run concurrently with the offences involving the hearse and stolen computer.
Bad Man was credited the equivalent of nearly three months he already spent in remand custody, leaving slightly more than three months on his sentence.
