City council has approved a permanent proclamation of an annual Sisters in Spirit Day each Oct. 4.
“In many ways this is housekeeping because on Jan. 12 as per the recommendations approved by council, one of the recommendations of the Reconciliation Lethbridge Advisory Committee is that we give ongoing support for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls through an annual Sisters in Spirit Day and make this a permanent declaration, and that is what is being requested today,” said Coun. Belinda Crowson, who sponsored the declaration motion during Tuesday’s council meeting.
Up until the passing of the permanent declaration, Sisters in Spirit Day, like other proclamations brought before council, had to be passed by the majority consent of council on a yearly basis. This is the first proclamation this council has enacted as an ongoing declaration, emphasizing the importance of the City’s reconciliation efforts and in solidarity with local missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited individuals.
