A fundraiser in the parking lot of The Lethbridge Herald today is aimed at helping residents of the adjacent Southern Alcare Manor.
Paige Lamane, who lost her son Grant to addiction in 2020, is organizing the fundraiser which starts at 5 p.m. and runs to 9.
The event will feature live music, line dance lessons, a burger and beverage for a donation, a drive-through lemonade stand, bake sale table and craft items made by people in recovery.
Lamane runs a Facebook page called Grant’s Mom and at Alcare Manor has created ‘Grant’s Closet” containing donated clothes and toiletries for residents. She also raises money to provide bus tickets so residents can make appointments.
“My son died of an overdose in May of 2020 and he had been a resident at Southern Alcare Manor for addictions recovery in past years and I wanted to do something to sort of help those in addiction,” said Lamane.
In the first year, Lamane had many friends donate cash so she could buy things like the bus tickets.
“Bus passes have been a life saver and it’s expanded in that so many of these people in there have families and they’re struggling too while this person is in recovery,” added Lamane. People with teenage kids are invited into the closet to get clothing and toiletries, she said.
“They come with nothing most of them; they don’t even have a toothbrush.”
People who want to help Lamane’s efforts after the fundraiser can contact her via her Facebook page or by email at plamane@gmail.com
“For me, it’s been a real way of dealing with the grief of losing my son.”
