A Lethbridge man charged with the city’s first murder of 2021 may ask to be released from custody while his case makes its way through the court system.
During a brief hearing Tuesday in Lethbridge provincial court, Calgary lawyer Gloria Froese said she is putting together a “bail plan” for her client, Jade Levi Trotter. However, because the charges are serious, the bail hearing would have to be held in Court of Queen’s Bench.
Trotter, who is charged with one count each of second-degree murder and break and enter, is in custody at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre and was not required to attend Tuesday’s hearing. Several previous court appearances have been adjourned to allow time for defence to review disclosure, but Tuesday it appeared defence is getting ready to take a step, and Froese told the judge she had sent the Crown an email about setting a date for a preliminary hearing.
Police, responding to a report Feb. 8 that someone was screaming for help, arrived at an apartment building in the 1200 block of 4 Avenue South and found the body of 65-year-old Glenn Lofthouse. Police arrested Trotter the following day at a residence in the 1100 block of 11 Street South.
Police reported that the suspect and victim knew each other, and the alleged murder was over a property dispute. Police also recovered a weapon they believe was used to kill Lofthouse.
The matter is scheduled to return to court July 16.
