As the graduating class of 2021 at Immanuel Christian Secondary School gets set to move forward in their lives and academic careers, school valedictorian Caleb Nieuwenhuis says his message for his classmates is a simple one.
“I really do hope the best for them in their lives, whichever way they may go,” he told The Herald on Monday. “I hope everybody does well.”
Nieuwenhuis acknowledged 2021 was a difficult year to keep up his own high academic standards with in person classes cancelled by public health orders at times, COVID-19 outbreaks, and the additional challenges of online learning. He said given what he and his classmates faced, he was happy to have good academic results as he gets set to pursue studies in physics at the University of Lethbridge this fall.
“I have been a long time with this school, and lots of hard work put into doing well in my classes, and lots of pride in my school work,” Nieuwenhuis stated. “It’s nice to be recognized.”
Nieuwenhuis’ mom Brenda, who teaches at Immanuel Christian, was also proud of her son and all the students achieved this year.
“I am just so proud of him,” she said. “He has worked hard his whole career, and really kind of pushed through this year. All the kids did, all his classmates did as well, and it’s just a wonderful thing to see.”
