Local Canada Day celebrations will once again be a more muted affair this year, confirmed City of Lethbridge general manager of Recreation and Culture Robin Harper during Thursday’s Cultural and Social Standing Policy Committee meeting.
Harper reported to SPC members that this year’s celebrations will be similar to last year’s “celebrate in your own backyard” theme, but with a few added public engagements.
The celebrate in your own backyard activities planned for this year include a Sidewalk Chalk Art Challenge, a Home Decorating Challenge, a Business Decorating Challenge, a Canada Day Book Activity Book which will be available for pick up in print or accessed online virtually, Canada Day Activity Packs, Virtual Sketch Art classes, Virtual Craft classes, Virtual Bingo, and Guided Virtual Exploration Activities being offered via a smart phone app.
The additional public engagement opportunities will include an “Arts in the Park” summer series hosted by New West Theatre, confirmed Harper, and five days of Indigenous heritage presentations held between June 27 and July 1 which will be viewed through the Yates Memorial Theatre’s upper mezzanine area windows. The presentations would be seen through the windows with a live radio feed to those listening outside, said Harper.
