A 25-year-old Lethbridge man who seriously injured another man by dragging him with his vehicle, has been sentenced to a year in jail.
Dylan Ivan Sokol pleaded guilty Wednesday in Lethbridge provincial court to one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, stemming from an incident last summer when he dragged a man, from whom he was fleeing, over a gravel median.
“It was a drug deal gone bad,” explained Crown Prosecutor Bruce Ainscough.
Ainscough said the man was attempting to get inside Sokol’s vehicle when Sokol took off with the man hanging out the driver’s door.
The man was also run over by the vehicle, and sustained fractures to his ribs and knee. His liver and abdomen were also damaged and he suffered a serious chest injury.
Lethbridge lawyer Vincent Guinan told court his client hopes to break away from his unlawful lifestyle, and has a home and supportive girlfriend to which he can return. Guinan noted Sokol had little support growing up; his mother died of drug addiction when he was a youth, and his father spent some 20 years in federal prisons.
Although Sokol was sentenced to a year in jail, he was given credit for the equivalent of a year spent in pre-trial custody, which concludes his sentence. He is, however, prohibited from driving for three years.
