A 35-year-old man accused of committing the city’s first murder of 2021, had his charge addressed in Lethbridge provincial court for the first time Friday.
Jade Levi Trotter, who remains in custody at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, was not required to attend court, where he stands charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of break and enter.
Duty counsel lawyer Brett Carlson represented the accused Friday, but simply adjourned the matter for a week.
“Mr. Trotter is in the process of obtaining counsel,” Carlson told Judge Eric Peterson.
Police, responding to a report early Monday that someone was screaming for help, arrived at an apartment building in the 1200 block of 4 Avenue South and found the body of 65-year-old Glenn Lofthouse. Police arrested Trotter the following day at a residence in the 1100 block of 11 Street South.
Lethbridge police staff sergeant Pete Christos pointed out Thursday the suspect and victim knew each other, and the alleged murder was over a property dispute. Police also recovered a weapon they believe was used to kill Lofthouse.
Although a 43-year-old man was killed in the same apartment building last May, police said the murders are not related and residents of the building are not at risk.
Jason Paul James Crane Chief and Justin Robert Adel White Cow are both charged with second-degree murder in relation to that death. They are scheduled to have a week-long preliminary hearing in June.
