The lawyer for a 46-year-old man charged last week with several drug offences on the Blood Reserve made a brief appearance Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court.
However, Calgary lawyer Robin McIntyre was simply granted an adjournment for a week, when, she told court, she may resolve some unrelated charges against her client, Marty Lee Fransen of Barnwell.
“I’m hopeful we can resolve some matters on the next date,” McIntyre said.
Fransen was charged Jan. 12 after a man was pulled over during a traffic stop in Standoff. The driver and lone occupant, who is not a member of the Blood Tribe, provided police with a false name. During a search of his vehicle Blood Tribe police found about 60 grams of carfentanyl, 16 grams of methamphetamine and four grams of cocaine, worth about $20,000 on the street.
Fransen is charged with three counts of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking, and single counts of obstruction and trespassing.
McIntyre isn’t prepared to deal with those charges yet, and said following Thursday’s court appearance she is still waiting for disclosure from the Crown’s office.
“I expect we will eventually be running bail on the Standoff charges and setting (them) for trial,” she said.
Fransen faces several earlier charges unrelated to the Standoff offences, some of which McIntyre hopes to resolve without a trial next Thursday.
The charges comprise drug possession, possession of stolen property, causing a child to be drug endangered, failure to comply with release conditions, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.
