By Canadian Press on January 29, 2026.

MISTISSINI — Provincial police say two men in their 30s were killed in a double murder Wednesday evening in a First Nation in northern Quebec.

Sgt. Hugues Beaulieu says the deaths appear to be linked to organized crime and there is no active shooter in the community.

Provincial police say the men were local residents and were shot inside a vehicle about 9 p.m., with their deaths pronounced at a local medical facility.

Earlier, the Cree Nation of Mistissini announced the community was under lockdown after a fatal shooting that had caused “multiple fatalities.

Mistissini is a community located along the shore of Lake Mistassini, 600 kilometres northwest of Quebec City.

Chief Michael Petawabano said in a statement the lockdown would remain in place until law enforcement confirmed it was safe to resume normal activities.

Beaulieu says the lockdown was a decision taken by local authorities and investigators have been on site since today.
