CP NewsAlert: Alberta government panel urges referendum to quit Canada Pension Plan

By Canadian Press on December 19, 2025.

EDMONTON — An Alberta panel re-examining the province’s relationship with Ottawa says it’s time to ditch the RCMP and hold a referendum on quitting the Canada Pension Plan.

But a report from the Alberta Next panel says any referendum on leaving the CPP should be held after residents receive more information on the pros and cons.

The panel also says such a vote should only be held if an Alberta pension plan matches or betters payouts and premiums of the federal system.

It’s one of a number of recommendations put forward by the panel, after months of online feedback and public town hall meetings led by Premier Danielle Smith.

The panel also recommends continuing its work to create an Alberta police force to replace the RCMP.

It further calls for referendums on more provincial control over immigration and on specific constitutional questions, such as abolishing the Senate.

More coming.
