Alberta schools prepare to resume classes for thousands after back-to-work order

By Canadian Press on October 28, 2025.

EDMONTON — Schools and school boards across Alberta are working to get more than 740,000 students ready to return to class on a day’s notice after a three-week provincewide strike.

The Edmonton Public School Board, in a letter, says it expects classes and bus service to run as usual when classes resume Wednesday, but says it will have more information later on school fees and diploma exams.

In Calgary, the Board of Education says buses will be running, but students and parents should be prepared for possible delays.

It also says extracurricular activities like sporting events and field trips may be delayed, rescheduled or cancelled.

The move comes after Premier Danielle Smith’s government introduced and passed within hours a bill ordering 51,000 striking teachers back to work.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association has protested the move but has indicated it will follow the law.
