Trump greets Carney as PM arrives at White House for meeting on trade, security

By Canadian Press on October 7, 2025.

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump greeted Mark Carney with a handshake as the Canadian prime minister arrived at the White House for a high-profile meeting today.

The two are expected to talk trade and security, although their meeting comes after Trump’s comments on Monday indicated the president remains committed to his aggressive tariff regime.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says that if Carney can’t reach a deal to get the tariffs removed, Canada should start hitting back hard with retaliatory measures against the U.S.

Some experts have tempered expectations of today’s meeting resulting in any immediate suspension of tariffs.

Carney and Trump have been in frequent contact since the their first White House meeting in May.

Carney has dropped Canada’s digital services tax and many retaliatory tariffs in an effort to de-escalate Trump’s trade war.
