NDP MP urges caution as Canada moves to mend trade relationship with China

By Canadian Press on September 24, 2025.

OTTAWA — A member of Parliament who has been a target of Chinese foreign interference says Canada should proceed with caution as it tries to mend its trading relationship with Beijing.

NDP MP Jenny Kwan says that while the government needs to expand its trade ties, it must also protect Canada’s sovereignty and democracy.

Prime Minister Mark Carney met with the Chinese premier at the UN on Tuesday and called it a constructive discussion.

Carney’s parliamentary secretary Kody Blois was in China recently with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, who is trying to convince Beijing to drop its damaging tariffs on Canadian canola.

Blois says the government is signalling it needs to find ways to co-operate with countries “we may not agree with.”

A public inquiry into foreign interference in Canadian democratic institutions found that China is the main perpetrator of foreign meddling in this country.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 24, 2025.
